More Western educated Somalis heading to Asia for med school

because it costs 10% of home much you would pay if you went to a Medical school here in the West...Im hearing, hablaayo iyo habel is in China for Medical school...Gone are the days when some Somalis would go to the Carribean to get med education..Now it is Malaysia, India and Pakistan.... Then they come back here and go to school for 1 year inorder to be certified...And amazing thing is that they got no delibatating loans waiting for them..right there and then they start making 140k a year pay...Pretty smart...Can anyone in here shine a light on this?

You are really over-simplifying things dude. What foreign-trained doctors have go to through to practice their professions in many Western countries is a grueling process. If someone told me half of the cabbies in any major Western city are foreign PhD holders and trained medical professionals, I wouldn't question that statistic. I have met far too many.

Yes there are tests like language exams and licensing exams. But you must get accepted into a residency program (both foreign medical graduates and foreign trained doctors). This is where things gets hard. Residency positions go to domestic individuals first and foremost and then there is the competition for whatever few spots are left for the internationally trained medical graduates/doctors.

People who leave Western countries for the sole reason of studying medicine in countries like India and Pakistan did not go to those countries because Western medical school is pricey. Far from it. The government is more than happy to pay for your studies (either grants and loans) and the banks are more than willing to give you a loan to pay for your tuition and then sum. They offer you the money because you will ultimately pay it back. They want you to take the money. With a physicians salary, you will not necessarily have a hard time paying off your debt. Yes, the average medical school debt may be $150,000 but they can afford paying it back when its all done.

People from the West who go to Ukraine or India or whatever for medical school go because they didn't get accepted in the Western university of their choice and/or scored poorly in their MCAT. It has nothing to do with finances.

Going to the Caribbean is what a lot of people I know do now. It takes shorter time, its more cost effective, the problem is even after you do everything people don't respect you

Apparently if you go for a Physician Assistance Masters first and then go to Med school later, you have a leg up... and PAs get paid good

@Broba...You are looking at this issue from a non-american point of view. I'm talking abt a Somali kid who finished school here who got their Bachelors from here but who went to the Ukraine or China to do their school.

I have to agree with you on one point and that is that many of these Somali cats do go to the Carribean bc they scored poorly on the MCAT but I believe the ones who go to Asia are motived by the cost effectiveness.

I aslo have to let u know that their are quick ways to get employed by hospitals here with such a background. There is this gov program that if you do it for (wo years they gona support you with your resume and. What it is. Is that they place u in a small town in red neck country in the appalachian mountains preferably in the middle of West Va. The other thing theyl do to u is put u in ghetto neighborhood clinics. If u willing to do that you got the seal of support from the US gov and no other hospital can mess with u son

Did any one of you knuckle-heads know that the US is short on physicians? Did u know that the gov is giving out incentives to lure in new med grads to do the 2 year shit in a litte town in TN inorder to have their loans forgiven, I bet u didn't know that. Any one of u who bcoming Docs nd got too much loan need to take advantage of that. It was brought to my attention by my ex gf(a Raxanweyn girl) who was just finishing med school, now she is in a little small town in Montana doing the 2yrs "prison". Luckily she don't wear the hijab otherwise they wouldve lyched her black ass

The reason why the US is short on doctors is because foreign trained doctors/foreign trained medical graduates are usually excluded from residency programs. There are tens of thousands of foreign medical graduates and foreign trained doctors in America, UK, Canada and other European countries who are not practicing in their fields.

Telling a Somali or anyone else for the matter living in the West to go to those countries to study medicine is the worst idea ever. Unless they plan on practicing their profession in Somalia or Africa or something, they shouldn't be wasting their time or money. They will have little success in the West.

A family member of mine went to India for 5 years and got hired by a company in the U.S. Health majors got you jobs regardless were you graduated from. Engineering , Sceience and Business there is competition

That happens to b the same story I got here. I know a girl who did her thing in a lil island callled Grenada nd now she works as a doctor in the state of Ohio. @Brobagand quit spreading ur propogandan secondly tell us why the US gives residency to desirable people such as Docs from foreign countries?

Broba: its understandable since many of the asain students study abroad particularly english speaking countries, but i think they only refuse to accept degrees from africa not asia
