Herdon.

There were no incentives for script writing in SOmalia unlike Ethiopia. Ethiopia had empires which required recording keeping thus writing was a necessity. In Somalia, the closest thing we had to a peninsula wide empire were the Ajuraan Empire who ruled from North to South to East.

Makes a lot of sense. If it was going to happen it should have happened during the Ajuraan empire. seems like each region of somalia was doing its doing its own thing during medieval and ancient times.

Herdon,

The Ajuuraan did have a script but it was limited to the elite and bureaucracy.

Waraa Abdiwahab,

Every sultanate recorded what they had to in either Arabic or a local scripture. The oldest Somali scripture was used by Dir and was created thousands of years ago. It was hyieroglyphs and the latest version of it was called sumado. Irir was always on the top front when it come to ilbaxnimo son, we preceed the Ajuraan bro.

saxiib,

if it was only limited to the elite then it wasn't much of script. it was like code language for the elite  but that could just mean that reading was a very exclusive activity back in the day

Herdon,

Exactly, saxiib. Once you have vast settlements and extensive local governance, you are forced to adopt a script for functions of government.

Other Zoomalis will not be able to read what we write, and that will distinguish us from them

I think the Arabfication got to us all. The first Arabs came to Somalia in 8th century maan and from there it was downhill.

We should have just used a modified arabic script - our people were writing using arabic for centuries. and besides we all live in western countries where we use the latin script, at least now those of us who cannot speak/write arabic would have learned something new.

I think that is a good solution but requires a great rethink.
