Boat capsizes of Somalia coast, 55 dead

Postby Brobaganda » Thu Dec 20, 2012 2:10 pm

At least 55 people are believed to have drowned after a boat capsized off the coast of Somalia, the UN refugee agency says.

The UNHCR said the overcrowded boat ran into trouble soon after it left the port of Bosasso in north-east Somalia.

The boat - believed to be carrying Somalis and Ethiopians - had been on its way to Yemen.

The UN said it is the biggest loss of life in the Gulf of Aden since February 2011 when 57 Somali migrants drowned.

"Twenty-three bodies have been recovered. The 32 remaining passengers are presumed to have drowned," the UNHCR said.

It added that at least five people had survived the accident, which happened on Tuesday.

"Without doubt, the Gulf of Aden is now the deadliest route for people fleeing conflict, violence and human rights abuses in the Horn of Africa," said UNHCR Representative for Somalia, Bruno Geddo.

Tens of thousands of people from the Horn of Africa cross the Gulf every year.

The agency said that those making the perilous journey often used unseaworthy and overcrowded boats or fell prey to unscrupulous smugglers.

It said that 95 people had drowned or gone missing in the waters between Somalia and Yemen so far this year.

Sad story.

Subxanallah imagine dying via drowning

A lot of white Folks in the Uk have little sympathy. Mainly cus of the documentary that was shown in 2008 about ethnic communities and their contributions. Somalis came below every other communities... most of them on government welfare.

Here are some of the things they've said regarding the boat capsizing:

That is 55 houses/ flats will not be going to waste in Tottenham.

bet british tax payer will sleep better tonight knowing this very inportant news item.a few polish boat sinkings would be nice

Good festive news then, many more to follow ,hopefully

It's because of the do gooders and the free handouts/houses/food/education and most other things in life that these people risk everything to get to the west.
The more that do get here the worse your standard of living will gradually become so that they can be financed so don't get all sentimental because some never made it....

excellent news, best all year, all they have to do is put more of the horrible parasites in bigger boats and lose some more.

Ah, what a pity (not).

Still its 55 unwanted Somalies that we won't have in Europe.

Whats more disturbing is the fact that all this comments have a majority support for your average article reader

Among those fifty-five were mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, daughters and sons, and uncles and aunts. All fifty-five of them walked fifty-five different paths and had uncountable dreams and aspirations. This is one tragedy among a million that continues to take place in Somalia. May Allah grant them easy entrance into Jannah.

Why is it so difficult to grieve for our kind?

The thread about some cadaan kids dying was placed at the top of the page for couple days. And fifty-five of our own die and we are dead silent. I know that we've all read this type of news almost each year, and it brings nothing but a sense of helplessness, hopelessness, and anger. But we should at least respond or acknowledge their death with few words.

^ No one leaves their country of origin for shits & giggles. I'm sure if there was an alternative, they'd consider it.

you just getta admit some ppl are dumb and make stupid or dangerous decisions. when you ride poorly maintianed, small wooden boat with 500 other ppl, nagivated by a bunch of thugs, into the vast rough indian ocean with little or water, you getta be dumb. no matter what problem you going through in Somalia, some of these ppl had homes and animals and wives and kids in Somalia, but they choose to drown and die in the see, what are they running from? Somalia is getting better not worse.

I was hearing another Somali woman in greek complaining about being beaten and abused daily in greek and that they don't have money and some of them are homeless and begg for money, so you left from Somalia for this? to be beaten, spitted on and beg for money? you are dumb if that is the life you traded for your home.

Harsh but absolutely true. Somalis love to run away from the problems of their country to someone else's home. The truth is its more preferable for them to be beaten in eastern European shitholes or claim benefits in Uk, than make something of themselves in their own country with dignity. Somalia, although still in a bad situation, has come a long way and is much better today than a year ago or even five years ago. This has to be stopped by the government of Somaliland and the Puntland admin. A little baby died too AUN, we need to put an end to this obsession with running away from our problems. The are hundred if not thousands of qurbajoog going back home for good every year because there are better opportunities back home now than in the west.

I agree with both of you but at the same time I will not judge them for what they did. That would be wrong. It's easy for us to criticize them in our comfy Western homes enjoying the highest standard of living. Our parents were the same people who left Somalia to search for a better life be it during the civil war or before the civil war. All these people simply wanted was what we are enjoying. The violence could have decreased by 99% but there is still extreme poverty there. It's still a hell hole. I had the rare experience of going to Somalia (all over the country) more than I can count and I always wanted to leave the same day I arrived. The place is hell. The people who are running away and jumping on these crappy boats are those without any family in the diaspora to help them. These people have nothing. Those who live "good lives" in Somalia live off remittances. No one works there. There are no jobs there. They basically have no real income. There's no hope there at the moment. Someone who relies on remittances in Somalia will not take that dangerous journey even though he knows the life he lives is shitty. He is not desperate though. The people on the boats are the ones who have absolutely nothing and believe they lose nothing if they try to go to the West.

me personally constantly hearing the tragic loss of lives on the sea would deter me from taking such decision, i mean dont get me wrong the alternative isn't much to stay for but i love my life.. I JUST DONT SEE WHY THEY CONTINOUSLY TAKE THIS GREAT RISK AND THIS IS MAINLY DUE TO TINY OLD BOATS THAT WOULD ONLY CARRY 10 PEOPLE BUT NOT 60 OR MORE WTF ALL THAT WEIGHT IS BOUND TO MAKE THAT BOAT SINK..... but i say why not if it is a huge ship :stylin:
