Is sugar toxic?

Postby Anarchist » Tue Dec 25, 2012 10:45 am

Here's Dr Lustig's lecture that sparked it all and the publishing of his research which led to the national debate about sugar consumption & the ensuing threats of corporate lawsuits.

Almost all metabolic disorders including insulin resistance & even cancer have been linked to sugar.

Paleo is the way to go.

@Agent - Thank you, sxb. Stuff is really addictive and almost in everything including sliced bread, ketchup, etc. I started reading the labels of the whole wheat bread that I used to buy and could not find a single bread that didn't have high fructose corn syrup, including the organic ones that have cane sugar instead. It's the sugar that we don't see or even think about & that is unaccounted for that constitutes a whopping 67% of all sugar consumed in this country. Sugary beverages are around 33% of sugar consumption, I believe, but there's a whole lot more sugar in our everyday Western diet that goes unnoticed. Even in hamburger buns at any of the chain restaurants and in almost all salad dressings, condiments like mustard, etc. Corporate irresponsibility on steroids.

@PrinceDaadi - You don't have to stop sugar all together, just consume it in moderation. I actually started the paleo diet early last week and have not consumed any sugar or carbohydrate since then. I drink my morning tea without sugar and consume only lean proteins i.e. mostly free range chicken, organic eggs, fish and lean turkey along with a lot of organic produce, specially the leafy greens, and for snacks it's usually Brazilian nuts, pumpkin seeds, acai berry, etc. The way nature intended it, the way God meant for us to eat. Without all the sugar highs and lows, and the sluggish feeling that comes after it. No headaches, no coffee, no bloated feeling and certainly no bowel movement issues. Try it for a week and see how you like it.

@BV - Interesting article and pretty much what has become the accepted reality about sugar i.e. that the liver is the only organ in the body that metabolizes fructose the same way it metabolizes ethanol and just like ethanol, high consumption of fructose causes pretty much the same metabolic syndromes as you'd find with high consumption of alcohol. Which is that along other things, both fructose and ethanol cause fatty liver disease and ultimately liver cirrhosis.

I couldn't agree with you more, that being said at the end of the day it's also the person's responsibility to take care of themselves and look closely at what they eat before eating it.

allot of things can be toxic when used in the wrong quantities.

Cancer cells love sugar though, so thats a sign to stay away from that high fructose syrup
