A riddle

Postby Skippa » Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:59 pm

Someone told me this riddle yesterday and I knew I’d seen it before…sure enough, it was here…

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=199427&p=2286160#p2286160

I think my answer is right, but she swears , just like Gats and Cawar did then, that I'm off...What am I missing?

If the men originally paid 30.

Then he realised the cost is only 25 and returns 5. That means they paid $8.333... each. Because 8.333... x 3= 25. So the "missing" dollar is in the rent money.

So:

$2 boy.

$3 Them.

$25 ($8.333 x 3) goes to the rent.

There's no missing quid..
Its the way they told the story that's miss leading..

They paid £30 for the room..
But it actually cost £25..
Refund of £5 was given..
... £3 was given back to the men while the lad took £2.. That's a total of £30 not £27.. Simples..

The misleading part is the following:
THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM,
WHICH IS A TOTAL OF $ 27,
That's incorrect. They paid:

$25 for the room. (Or $8.333 each).
$2 to the boy. (or $0.666 each).
And they received $3 back ($1.00 each).

It clearly says each guest paid £10..
Your solution is also confusing.

The missing quid has been accounted for.
The bit that's confusing is when he added the £2 to the £27.. There was no need for that.. Heck there was no need to mention how much each guy paid either.. :|

There is nothing confusing about it. Although they originally paid £10 each, they don't receive their individual refunds of £1 against their original payment of £10, but against a minimised balance of 10 -0.666. Which means they have paid £8.333 for the room.

We are basically saying the same thing but in differnt ways.

Cilmidoone, you're absolutely right and that's how I see it too...the issue is not in the math but in the way the problem is posed.

yeah the problem is the way it is told especially the last bit.

The total amount for the room = $30
The amount each man has to pay = $10 (30/3 = 10)
The new amount for the room = $25
The amount refunded = $5
Amount boy pockets = $2
Amount boy refunds = $3 ($1 to each man)
The new amount each man paid = $9.33 (25/3 = 8.3333....+1)
The total amount the men paid = $28 (in real sums i.e. calculation), $27.99 (in real life-because you cannot share equally between 3 persons in this case i.e. $1 between 3 men = 33c each)
Total amount including boys money = $30 (28+2) (again in real sums), $29.99 (in real life)

so actually there is one cent missing, so probably the boy pocketed it.

Good one it did mess with my head for a minute

I think the answer is there was no other dollar since the men were not really charged $30

At the end of the day, the guy at the desk got $25

The three men paid $9 each which was a total of $27

There is a difference of $2 which the cheeky boy pocketed

Am I right?
  Maybe it was too early in the morning.

Nah hang on I was on to something - there is a ghost $1

Check this out yeah, the cost of the room to the guys was 9, because they paid 10 and got 1 back so that night those potential freaky boys are collectively out $27 and the little kid took $2 which makes $29, where did the $1 go?

This is crazy man
