Xidigta, Gurey and Sultanka
Thank you gentlemen. The saddest thing about the situation is that both ourselves and our Somali brothers live in dreams. they believe that somalilnd will somehow give up and come back to the fold if it cant get recognition.
It shows how little we know each other despite sharing culture, ethnicity, language and imported faith system. Unrecogntion will STRENGTHEN our resolve in fact it serves as the glue that holds this otherwise potentialy frcatious nation together. As long as the politicians can promise recognition and Landers feel under the hostile gaze of deadly enemies like Somalia, the Arabs, the UN, the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic counteries and the African union - they will remain together and as united as possible. Do you think Silanyo and Kulmiye would have given up sio easily in 2003 elections if Somaliland was recognised? Absolutely not. they would have probably started a mini-war. He knew they were probably cheated(I am not so sure) but thought of the nation because he knew the threats
It is their threat and hostility that keeps us strong. the moment Somalilnd is recognised and teh general pouplation feel secure under international protection they will trurn their attentions inwards, perhaps encouraged by international largesse. Somaliland will likely become a fairly economically succesful but extremely weak and corrupt government.
The fact that we know we have such powerful enemies like the UN political establishment(UN aid branches like UNICEF are doing sterling job)and the whole of the Arab race keeps united and strong. it keeps on our toes.
Unrecognition actually works for us in that sense. If course it also clips our wings economically because we are lumped with our unfortunate brothers in teh south. So although Berbera is one of teh safest ports in teh world you still have to pay premiuim maritime insurance because it is "Somalia". and who will even think about investing in "Somalia".
Somalilanders are also deluding themselves if we believe trecognition is round teh corner. It is not. Give it 50 years of stability, peace and prosperity and you might stand a chance. Because what most Somalilnders do not know is the sheer organised hostility from some of the most powerful regional players towards us. egypt makes a point of reaffirming the "Sovereignty and territoria, integrity" of Somalia everytime Edna Aden or Pres. Riyal visits an African country. It issues these statements from the foreign ministry in Cairos and usually releases it throught the Embassy in which Lander politicians are visiting.
The message is claer: Don't even think about it. Yemen also tells the US how strong united somalia will be useful in teh war on terror in the area. Mosr seriously for Somaliland, the Saudis remind America and Britian every so often not to get too close to us. America listens to Saudi. Smaller enemies make quite a bit of running too. Djibouti is hostile out of two reasons: Jelousy because we will be bigger than them in every sense of the word and being the tiniest boy in the neighborhood is not a good place to be in Africa and more rationally we will compete with them for investment and political influence and they will lose out on both. They know for example that if Somaliland was recognised, the current US HQ in teh region will most likely be Berbera than DJ. Eritrea hates us because Etghiopia will no longer need Assab and Massawa,. Sudanm despises us because our secession might give the dinka and Nuer more determination to go it alone. Even ethiopia would rather keep us unrecognised because it can influence more readily and keep ius a much weaker partner.
And friends? Almost none. So recognition won't come anytime soon - which is good.
