We'd have to ask a lot of questions as to what the mehr is for and why it needs to be paid directly to her, as opposed to some cultures that suggest it goes to her family/father. I'm sure someone somewhere has made an attempt to argue that the purpose of the mehr is an insurance in the event of the husband's passing. But mufassireen would say that its purpose is relinquishing a woman's power in the household. Take either one and place it in today's context and you'll begin to ask questions yourself. When there are as much as and in some countries far more women than men being educated, one can't help but wonder the fairness in it all. ?
I never considered the hikmah behind Mahr. Interesting point you raised. Will do my own readings. All I know is I'm entitled to Mahr, which has to be something of monetary value. I will run wild with that idea for now. Jks.

Okay, I'm no jurist but technically speaking if the hukum is mahr must be paid, then that hukum cannot be abrogated simply because of our perception that the wisdom behind it may not be applicable. With regards to who the mahr is being paid to and what exactly it entails, you have every right to question beforehand.

Sidenote; enough wedding bashing in this thread. They're such a joyous occassion when two people decide to share their lives and you get to be part of that happy festivity.

Waxaa ladhahay Do not spend money that you don't have ( Dayn, Ayuuto etc), on something you don't like( Niiko, Futo Rux, Qaylo iyo danbi), to please people that you don't know/Like ( You don't know a third of the people that are going to attend or you don't even like them at all). Gabdhaha feel they are under valued if they don't get a wedding. Like they are giving that precious Candho which they have been taken care of for so long. That is the concept of marriage.
