Nationalism was invented by French and Germans back in the late 18th century by the french and 19th century by the Germans to reunite the German people and bring the French people into the republic respectively. It only really took off in the early 20th century, and we all know the devastating wars that occurred. Otherwise, for most peoples history they identified with their tribes, religion, or kingdoms/empires they lived in. There was no such thing as a sense of "nationalism" in the peoples minds that we know. So Nationalism is only a little over 200 years old.
