Somalis in Virginia

Postby Talo alle udaa » Sun Jun 02, 2013 2:05 am

Seem to be more liberal. I assume they came to the states before the civil war?

Where they the so-called privelege families in Siyad Barre govt. or something? or just established families that had the means to flee before every one else?

I know that a lot of ex government officials and well to do families live in the Maryland/DC/Virginia areas, so you're probably right.

I don't get this retarded notion that everyone who did well in Somalia were government officials, these bed room stories of rampant corruption feed to the Xaram offspring roaming the ghettos of the west today still linger in their heads, everyone knows the private sector was growing rapidly in the 80s, central bank was lending money to business and people were living the life.

The most well off in the diaspora live in the DMV. They all live in small towns with no more than 50,000 people but they are always no more than 20 minutes away from each other. The inhabitants range from families that looted the central bank of Somalia, businessmen, gifted students that were sent away to America to study but never came back to Somalia and instead started families, exiles who were successful people and ex-government officials. It is a place you will find 30 year old Somalis born in the U.S. I like the DMV. Middle-class and upper middle class Somalis. It's like stumbling upon a different world :D

Oh, and it's a place where the Somali parents can speak perfect English without an accent.

I don't think they are any different from other Somalis who live in western countries.

I was actually mentioning this to my Somali friend a few months back. When i first met a Somali in DC, he told me he came to America in 1970. He spoke perfect English and was very liberal thinking for his age. In total, I met around 10 Somalis in the DC area (northern VA) and most were clearly there for a long time and seemed to be successful. One thing is certain: the Somalis in D.C. have been there before most Somalis came in 1991-993.

I wonder if, in terms of mindset, such Somalis see themselves as Somali or American.

My awoowe came to the USA in the 1960s and later became a citizen but he lived in Somalia and did well for himself. He wasn't part of the government either.

My father came here on the late 70s and finished high school and college in DC

Murax's family also came in the 70s

I feel great knowing that I contributed a part to making them seek honest work instead of living off the Somali taxpayer aka Booli qaran.
