Snet Military Analysts, soo yara gala

Postby misterioso » Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:39 pm

MenaceToSociety's similar titled topic spurred an idea in my mind. It's the military/technology gap between the West and Islamic movements such as the Taliban, al-Shabaab, etc. I'm sure those Islamic movements are doing their best to narrow the gap. I would say, it's sorta miracle that they haven't been wiped off the face of the earth given that the West enjoys near complete supremacy on military hardware.

So, the question is; what can they do to narrow the gap? What historical examples are there where a weak antagonist was able to overcome a technological advanced adversary?

Discuss.

nothing to do with technology.
Taliban has the mountains, which trumps whatever technology they throw at them.
even if in future they have drones on land firing guns on them and micro drones the size of pigeons swarming all over the battlefield.
taliban will survive and continue to be a threat.

alshabab has no mountains, which explains why they have been nearly exterminated with less than 1% of the money spent in Afghanistan.

^^ Gurey, plus the drought of 2011 did them in big time. I knew the jig for them was up as early as mid 2010. The failed Battle of Badr offensive was their peak and poor strategy did them in.

Mr. Beendiid, topic isn't about blaming them or their shortcomings. If you were amir Godane, what would you do to narrow the gap?

I would resign. His leadership and strategy failed to achieve results.

It hasn't yet elapsed a decade to judge his leadership. Besides, resigning doesn't exist in their dictionary.

alshabab are bunch of pathetic dis organized lunatics they could have survived the urban battle of mogadisho had they laid down some cohesive urban fighting strategies
a small army of no more than 1000 kept their ground in the sunni sub urban of daaraya against the might of tanks and air strikes.

gurey take a look at this video

Wasn't them retreating from Mogadishu to spare as many lives a wise idea?

this has little to do with tactics its to do with strategy.
they lost the war for hearts and minds, this was the main battle.

An interesting development:
Mali manual suggests al-Qaida has feared weapon
Associated Press – 16 hrs ago
TIMBUKTU, Mali (AP) — The photocopies of the manual lay in heaps on the floor, in stacks that scaled one wall, like Xeroxed, stapled handouts for a class.

Except that the students in this case were al-Qaida fighters in Mali. And the manual was a detailed guide, with diagrams and photographs, on how to use a weapon that particularly concerns the United States: A surface-to-air missile capable of taking down a commercial airplane.

The 26-page document in Arabic, recovered by The Associated Press in a building that had been occupied by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb in Timbuktu, strongly suggests the group now possesses the SA-7 surface-to-air missile, known to the Pentagon as the Grail, according to terrorism specialists. And it confirms that the al-Qaida cell is actively training its fighters to use these weapons, also called man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADS, which likely came from the arms depots of ex-Libyan strongman Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

Not really. Those militias have embarked on ways to narrow the gap. At one point, they won't be at a disadvantage technologically/militarily. We don't know what they're doing or can do to adapt, and this topic is trying to explore that.
