There are some worrying signs from Burao. When teh Waahbbist bstrad faruur was arrested Burao women held violent demonstrations. Burao is the only major city in somalilnd which still openly uses the Somalia shilling alongside the Somaliland one. Even more worryingly all teh violent incidents in the last few days came from Burao: three dead in kulmiye shoot-out and at least three others dead and dozens injured in an incredibly foolhardy (typical Burao behaviour) mass clan assault on Burao central prison.
Anybody eve see that 70s cult hit movie the "precinct"? Well this was shades of that. The story would have been suitable for a Beavis and Butthead episode if it weren't so deadly. Basically a group of would-be Dhulbhante highway robbers shot a Landcruiser pickup near Las anod. What the unfortunate would be thieves did not know was that the truck was carrying half-a dozen Miliatry policemen armed to the teeth. In teh shoot out that insued one of the MP was killed. The gang were all nabbed and remanded in Buirao central prison. That was the Beavis bit. Now enter the the buttheads in the shape of the HJ sub-clan the dead MP belonged to. They simply approached the prison and demanded the accused men be handed over to them. They might have been encouraged by a precedent in Garowe when Mijerteein clansmen simply walked into a prsion and shot to pieces two dhulbhante men accused of killing a Mijertein officer in a similar robbery attempt.
Fortunately in this case the prison authorites told the clansmen to toddle-off. they did but returned in force with machine guns and grenades and simply attempted to take-over the whole prison! The fighting went on for three hours and the buttheads were chased out of town!
The HJ fears are rooted in history. they have this nightmare of never been able to rule Somaliland. It is called the NUF syndrome.[/quote]
