hello my ethiopian friend, i dont know if the link works but basically is shows ethiopia being divided into new provinces (not 'states' - ethiopia is not like eu)
dont you think ethiopia should drop this ethnic federalism trash which does harm in the long time and threatens ethiopia's unity. federalism itself is not bad but it should be based on geography not demography and the country should teach its people a sense of 'ethiopianness'. i told my amhara friend this and as an anti federalist he was satisfied even if he wanted centralised rule, he wants ethiopia not only as a state but as a nation to be one, homogeneous and assimilated.

do you agree with my proposal:
1. ethiopia be divided into provinces and each province should be geography based and equal sized
2. each province should be named after its capital city e.g. bahir dar province
3. the division of power and finances should be the same
4. each province should not have its own symbols e.g. flags, anthem
5. article 39 be dropped - ethiopia should be indivisible
6. politics and govt should be civic not sectarian

At this stage we need the ethnic federalism and its in the interest of Somalis and many others. The Amhara do not like ethnic federalism because their game is exposed and they can't move the chess like they can if they hide their agenda under "Ethiopia". You see right now Oromia is the biggest region but only 5000kg sq bigger than Somali Region.

The Amhara have one of the most fertile regions and agriculture haven but they prefer if they controlled everyone through centralized authority. The Tigray deny them that and ensured all regions are ethnic based. They used to exist before but not like at the moment thanks to TPLF.

The TPLF does not consider Somali that of a threat even though it knows they can topple them they are more worried about the Amhara and Oromo and this is good for us.

Recently the Tigrays started to evict all Amhara from their region, Gambella did the same, Somali Region and even the Benishangul-Gumuz.

The Tigrays want to secede from Ethiopia but not before they fortify Tigray and make it self sufficient. They also want to seize Benishangul-Gumuz Region (the dam, water, agriculture) and the Afar region (for port)...their region is mountainous and just desert.

Article 39 can not be dropped because this is the long term agenda of Tigray...they going to take Afar and secede from Ethiopia. Amhara want to stop and that's why they hate the current system.

This is why I try to tell Somalis, we need to integrate because Highlanders are going to finish themselves and going to collapse on their own. We need to be at a position where we have a say about Afar region. The Tigray is best for the Somali people because they want Ethiopia to end its imperialism. The TPLF betrayed the Somali people, Eritrea and the Tigray. Right now there are Tigray rebels in Tigray region and they hate the TPLF whom they called agame/woyane.

Since Meles is gone, maybe in the next 15 years TPLF will erode and Tigray will break away...which means Somalis get their region too, Oromia can't decide whether to stay with Amhara...they can't be trusted.

The best people for Somali freedom is Tigray. Nimankani ma sexdaan dagalna way yaqanan...hadi kuwas laga dhax saaro Ethiopia, Ethiopia waxba ma hayso...Tigraygu wa sida Isaaqa oo kale, they want secession lakin they have the abilities to mobilize and unite Habeshi or dissolve them.

Somalia hadi laga saro SOmaliland ma soconayso. Ethiopia hadi Tigray laga saro ma soconayso. They are the equilibrium and mobilizers...wa niman faan badan sida Isaaqa...oo very proud ah oo is jeceyl oo dhulkooda aaaaaaad uu jacayl.

Wax jiira maha. The regions are staying as they are for now until there is change in the government. If Amhara take over all of them will disappear.

hawdian, since u dont support somaliland's independence based on pre 1960 colonial borders, and i respect ur choice even if i disagree, which of the following do u support in the long term:
a. somali republic only (british somaliland and italian somalia) or
b. greater somali/greater horn state

In the long term, there could be three possible things;

1) Greater Somalia

2) Greater Ethiopia

3) Complete tribal/ethnic disintegration...Somalis with many regional states, Tigray Republic, Oromia, Amhara Republic, Afar Republic.

I like to think we Somalis are the end of disintegration, we could be in this for another 20-30 years the longest but the same test awaits for Ethiopia.

Tigray region wants complete secession, Afar, Oromia, 95% of Somalis, Gambella and others. Each has an idea of its own map and boundaries and issues to justify its secession.

The main forces are those three and who wins depends on how united they are for their cause and the over all global issues. If the international community feels all ethnic groups have the right to divorce each others then we will see hundreds of states across Africa, Asia, and other regions.

Some Ethiopians believe the entire Horn of Africa is Ethiopia while we have Somalis who believe in the Greater Somalia. There will be three way war but I feel Greater groups will have the momentum and it wont be war like in 1977 but integration, influence and economic dominance. Somalis have the skills and connections to succeed over the three Habesha groups (Gurage, Amhara and Tigre) but these groups also sit on massive resources.

The faster Somalis come together and start thinking going west into the Highlanders, the sooner we will dominate the region. Somaliland sits in a perfect place to rip big from Ethiopia and stealth Somali expansion. That's why its policy shouldn't be secession and shouldn't see Somalis as enemies but it needs to take leadership and say Somalis lets put the past behind us and together work on this new chapter of Greater Somali without politicizing it too much...we think business, we think infrastructure and economic integration and we reconnect all Somali territories and expand our cultural dominance.

Somaliland will then be seen as a good role model instead they wasted 22 years crying about a dictator. Tigray people faced the worst dictator and today they sit in Addis Ababa---Somaliland people could have done the same but no they down sized their world.

The whole region is going to spill over to each other and SL is trying to go the opposite direction. It has to side with its Somalis and help Somali culture, arts, business and infrastructure to spill over into Ethiopia...rather than isolating itself.

Greater Ethiopia can only be achieved if Somalis and Somali Region are on board and Somalis in Somali region can expand into Somalia with their Ethiopian shirt on...this can happen but of course it has very slim.

Greater Somalia is inevitable and Somaliland should reconsider its game and negotiate a better deal.

I think the issue with Somalis is they are very emotional people. They seem to let past grievances shape the course of their interactions with each other. We don't seem to understand the old adage "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Yeah Mekelle is nice cozy city. In my opinion, Isaaq and Tigre have a lot of similar attitude and values.
