Is this disrespect or modesty

Postby saacJabshee » Sat Aug 10, 2013 5:46 am

I was invited for dinner yesterday with few uncles and and freinds. We went to a friend house round about 6ish.I didnt even want to go but I was forced. After went in the house and exchanged pleasantries and old jokes about Somalia and a few tribal ones, we went in the kitchen. There was this quite old but lovely hoyo in there who cook the food. She said that she has been in the kitchen since 1 o'clock and so we must finish everything she has made. My uncle (the one who knew the guy that invited us) said the usual 'oh am full anyways". So we sat down and then the uncles started saying "i dont want too much" and things like that. In my head I began to think on a moral level. I mean here is this old lady who was standing in the for 5 hrs the least we can do is eat till we're full and whatever that's left after that is none of our business. Anyways It was my turn to fill my plate but I couldn't go all out because these odeyal's plate is half empty. So my plate had to look like theirs otherwise I will look hungry. The food tasted very good and I left pissed of because I couldn't go for a second round. is this disrespectful to the old hoyo? or is it modesty?

Its normal.Somalis have this tendency to look less hungry when there are many people around. But let there be only one person and u will see the plate overfilled

Typical Somali behaviour, the guest says "oh but I am not that hungry" then the host has to say "no just one more spoonful" and then they heap the food on the plate and then by some miracle the 'full' guest finishes the food. So the host goes "oh just one more spoonful" and so on and so forth until the guest literally stops eating the food and it just stays on the plate.

That is dhaqan Somaali. Unless you are reer magaal and can serve yourself like a normal person and eat what you can without showiste behaviour.
