So before mirrors became mainstream, the only way people could see themselves was in a reflection of water?

Shit. Never thought of this before. What about weapons, like swords and shields? Could they not see their reflections on them? I heard that if you turn around quick enough you can see your own face. Maybe they did that.

It hardly matters though, because it's not like you could take a picture of yourself on your phone or something.

Could you not just have a pot of water near some candles?
