Somalia population estimation & 1975 census by UNDP

UNDP the biggest organisation that has been working for Somalia since the civil started has produced a 15 years population estimation from 1995 to 2015. They published this population estimation in 1997.

I print-screened this table they provided in their documents showing the 18 regions of Somalia and estimation of each regions population throughout a period of 15 years. (1995-2015)

Somalia population was roughly 4.9 million in 1975 and in 1985 it was roughly 6.1 million. Don't forget Somalia has the highest fertility rate in the world but also the highest mortality rate.

According to the UNDP estimation the top 5 regions with the highest population in Somalia come in this order:

1. Banaadir/Mogadishu
2. Bay
3. Lower Shabelle
4. Middle Shabelle
5. Gedo

the top 5 regions with the lowest population came in this order:
1. Sool
2. Nugaal
3. Awdal
4.Middle Jubba
5.Sanaag

The remaining 8 regions were average population.

UNDP has predicated Somalia population in 2015 to be roughly 12 Million. Afcourse Somalia is a unpredictable country due to the ongoing fighting and nomadic movements.

Their methodology is wrongly executed. In addition, they were based in Nairobi.

UNDP had many relief organisations in Somalia such as UNICEF, World Food programe (WFP) etc. UNDP is the only independent board that had access to all of Somalia and main organisation that pays Somaliland and Puntland.

Well Southern Somalia was always more populated than North Somalia, there is nothing secret about that. Also present day majority of the population of Somaliland and Puntland the residents are from Southern Somalia. There is huge Hawiye presents in Hargeysa, there is huge Marehan presents in Borama, there is huge Raxanweyne presents in Bosaso.

This is a projected estimation. Basically they get the figure from the authority of the place and this is not from UNDP but from FOA. Though their figure seems abit similar from the figure I posted.

Learn the difference between rural and urban population. Somalia was always a rural population. Majority of Southern Somalia is still stuck in rural mentality due to the ongoing civil war. Unlike Somaliland which had relative peace.

Places like Borama, Hargeysa, Bosaso (towns in North and North East Somalia) used to be small towns before the war, just like the rest of Southern Somalia. However since Somaliland and Puntland had relative peace, their rural population shifted and decreased and their urban population increased. Thats why their towns are bigger compared to Southern towns. That doesn't mean their region has higher population.
