I thought the Prophet pbuh encouraged us to remember the dead by visiting their graves and making dua for them.
You can visit graves. But there is a difference. These people ask the person thats in the grave for help which makes it shirk.

While Somalia has been absolute trash the past couple decades, if there has been ONE benefit it is that their Aqeeda has gotten markedly better. The Qurafaad, Bidciyaad of the old days and the Shirk rituals of the past are almost extinct now.

Ameen.

Interesting. So explain Ahlusunna wal-jamaaca to me. I understood they got into the fight when Shabaab started digging up the mosque tombs. What is their position on siyarro and Mowlid if it is not the traditional one? Wiki only describes them as Sufi and anti-Wahaabbi.

Biyooleey aa la buubaa Aweys Burhaan badanoow Abkaa waaye, is what they used to chant. Sound familiar Grant?

But yeah these siyaaro's definitely lead to many unIslamic things. People would go and ask Sheikh Aweys for this or that, which is shirk. They'd take the dust from the cars that had visited Biyooleey and mark themselves with it calling it a blessing.

Jamal,

The Volunteer I was quoting was there I think 1968-69. I was there 1966-67. You can catch me here if you wait for it to download: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=163575&st=0&sk=t&sd=a There is also a second link in there that takes almost a minute to load. I am 70 and a returned Peace Corps Volunteer.

 FOR THE REST OF YOU FOLKS: I am not getting my questions answered here. What is Ahlusunna's position on siyarro and Mowlid?

Sheikh aweys is still a big sheikh in Somalia especially in the banaadir region which is where he was based and his biggest followers are from, I've never been to a Somali Mawlid where his qasidas are not recited and he his not remembered.

:( This lack of awareness and response is very, very, disappointing. You folks are missing out on a very important part of your history and you need to do some reading. The Saalihiya, the Wahaabbis and al Shabaab do not bury in mosques. They are even unhappy over the burial under the green dome in Medina. But the Qadiriyya, the Banadiir Ulema and Ahlusunna wal-Jamaaca, do. It's Sufi vs Salaafi.

You will all do yourself a big favor by reading this. THIS Sheik Aweys stopped the Christian expansion into East Africa and expanded Islam as far south as Zanzibar and as far west as the Congo. Two Sultans of Zanzibar were among his Khalifa. Get your reading glasses out, you jahils!

Navy and Haywire,

I know siyarro, but the volunteer didn't. Apparently, that is the way it was used, or at least the way he remembered it. I don't think he's just telling stories.
I see, it must be a misquote because I would hate to think a muslim would say such thing. Mowlid the Shia dynasty initiated such festivities and it gradually became incorporated into the muslim traditions. In college, I took a class in the history of Islamic civilization, and the lecturer said that the Shia's and the Sunnis belief of the coming of the Mahdi is nothing but a carbon copy of the belief of the return of prophet Issa towards mankind's time on earth!
