I thought hamas was the ruling party in the Palestinian govt..... are they both separate?

Hamas won the last election freely but of course the hypocrites west who keep preaching democracy went against it. Hamas controls gaza while the recognized Palestinian gov is led by mahmuud abbas of fatah and they control the west bank. Of course neither controls shit, just a big prison of the zionist occupiers.

Hamas controls the Gaza Strip, and the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) controls the West Bank. There is no Palestinian Government because you have two different entities controlling two different territories. They have tried and are trying to have a unity government. The thing is that PLO is the "recognized" government of the Palestinian terrirtories because the PLO under Yassir Arafat recognized Israel's right to exist, something Hamas has not done. Also, Hamas is considered a terrorist organization because of their many suicide attacks in Israel and their power to hit Israel cities with their rockets.

Now remember that the PLO is a party confederation and the largest party in there is Fatah. Fatah and Hamas competed in 2006 for local elections in Gaza, the US and Israel heavily supported Fatah, and said because it is democratic elections we will support whatever outcome. Guess what happened? Fatah lost bad, and Hamas won. That led to a brief conflict where Fatah was forced out of Gaza by Hamas when they decided to fight. Since then Gaza has become Hamas territory and West Bank Fatah. With no unity government, because Israel instigates something between them always.
