The one good thing I've noticed of the Somalis is that the youth, particularly the males, are very liberal. They are not dinosaurs like the generations before them. Let these old men die. Somalia's constitution will be secular. I am sure Somalia will be as tolerant and open as the West. I did not see the average Somali back home practice like their parents. They are more liberal than even the Somali kids in the West. They want to be able to blast hip hop in the streets, go out and date people, they want to watch movies. They want romance, they want to dance, they don't care about religious differences. Turkish and Chinese presence in Somalia has shown them foreigners and foreign ideas are not dangerous. They are open to the world and they prefer it to the intolerance they were exposed to. They are learning foreign languages and English to be exposed to different cultures. Learning their languages allows them to explore more superior cultures
I've always said globalization will save the Somali people. Internet has given access to new ideas for them. They are dying to implement those ideas in their own society. Somali youth don't cross the seas only because they are unemployed. They do so because they want to live liberal lives. They are tired of clan. They are tired of religious violence. They are tired of being victims to backwards culture.
Its not a matter of if but how soon will Somalia look like the Netherlands or Canada culturally? How soon will little girls be given the right to go to school? How soon will the Madhibaan no longer be second class citizens? How soon will clans end their revenge killings? How soon will interracial and gay marriages be protected?
As each generation is born, the more liberal and open minded they will be. This is what scares the religious and Al Shabab. More people are turning to cell phones, Twitter, YouTube. It won't be long before these Somalis become really enlightened to the point that they will start dying for their beliefs.... becoming martyrs and having their legacy written in the history books for the generations after them to read
