I don't have a cushy life in the diaspora. And for you to assume that living away from your country is a "privilege" says more about you than me. I work for a living and attend university. I support many relatives back home who do absolutely nothing productive due to laziness and a useless government. I am only commenting on what I've heard and observed first-hand. I have every right to comment on the situation even from the "comfort" of qaxootinimo. Like I said these people are driven only by one thing and that's greed. In the west, Somalis are the lowest in just about every socio-economic scale. They are fleeing their own country , not for better education, not for freedom of expression, nor for food and safety. They are fleeing Somalia for government housing, benefits and dole money. They can't even take advantage of the free education. Those are the ones that make it to the west. The rest rot in Yemen where they are actually much worse of than they were at home. Or they rot in Gulf-arab jails only to be deported back home or they die in the desert and seas. Yeah, these people are bettering themselves. But hey, I suppose the fish are grateful.

actually, I agree with you, I witnessed person who paid $15,000 to get visa in Europe, doing fake wedding and claiming going to honeymoon. to end up refugee in European country, si la iska deebo!!

I hate to disagree Liquid, but the pursuit of better life is not the same as greed. This is an inherent human behaviour. In addition, human beings value safety and a promising future for their families.

Somalis are leaving somalia because of poverty; the lack of empployment opportunities, the absence of capital and insecurity combine to create a dangerous atmosphere.

We should appreciate that the somali economy is driven to a large extent by diaspora somalis; I have seen studies that show that nearly 70% of GDP is diaspora based.

I agree, however, that we need to learn from suffering and create the conditions for a sustainable economic development in somalia.

It's all in the perspective really. Ending up in welfare and in the ghetto isn't so much of a future either. There is nothing wrong with making the best of what you have at home and living a dignified life. There is little dignity in being labeled as a tax-payer's burden.

P.s if you go to Nairobi, South Africa or the middle east, you will realise that somalis are not leading a good life. They are just better off than those back home.

SummerRain, I have looked at some statistics; unemployment amongst somalis is high in mainland Europe; welfare benefits is just one of several reasons. There is prelevant institutional discrimination; language barriers, and lack of skills. But, sure welfare provisions become a magnate to somalis.

Wow talk about low ambitions. Like Summerrain said, "better" may be relative. But a Somali being beaten up in a Nairobi shithole or living on government welfare (which is poverty by western standards) is not better than a poor person in Somalia who has a small corner-shop which makes enough to pay for food and his/her kids school fees, let alone the ones who live quite well-off even by 1st world standards but decide to leg it to Europe anyway. You can argue about the semantics all day but the truth is a Somali outside his country is, on average, not better or worse off than one inside it.
