Not sure about Europe but at States side ,A guy with 4+ kids might be making over $5k a month, salary most collage grads can't even earn and yet he and his wife are identified as low-income. Waxaas ma institutional discrimination ba? Please we have enough corrupted souls, don't call for revolution of thought Etc while excusing the failures of those you want change to come to. It's so bad some even believe living off welfare under false pretext isn't haram.

And you have a point it isn't always about welfare either, the average Somali youth lack proper job interviewing skills, interpersonal and communication skills to work with non Somali audiences. The lack of those will significantly impact success in job market. They simply don't take the time to develop or improve in those areas....hence liquid's point about lack of initiative, morals etc

SummerRain, In Scandnavia, families with 4+ kids make more money than the average white collar worker. I agree with everything you wrote; there is moral decay. In Europe, Somalis are relatively newcomers; 20+ years of war, lack of education, language barrier and rampant xenophobia etc cannot be discarded.

By the way, there is a cultural shift; our forefathers worked hard; they toiled the soil; they herded camels in harsh environments and did business; they went overseas and laboured. Their mantra was :nimaan shaqeeysanin shaah ma cabo;

I have discussed our moral decays on these boards. I have been called a self-hating somali ( I think, LiquidH belonged to the herd that wanted to lynch me ).

However, it is a fallacy to claim that somalis back home are better off than those in the west. Schooling, healthcare, consumerism in combination with the absence of job opportunities, has resulted in hardship; at least those abroad have free health care, schooling for their kids and can feed their families.

It is not an issue of relativism or semantics; it is the truth.

That will somehow factor in the quality of education they receive in schools as well as being competitive in higher education success.

True; but please do not forget the rule of numbers; there are more somali graduates/high school leavers in the west today than there has ever been; granted, the main reason is population increase.

In Sweden, there were several studies conducted on the education levels of Somalis (first generation); In the 1990s-2000, the share of somalis with post secondary education was higher than that of most immigrant groups (higher than other Africans, Latin Americans and the Middle east). Last year, there was a debate in Sweden when many politicians and academics claimed that most somalis were Illiterates; there is a small rustbelt town (pop 40 000) home to c:a 4 000 SOmalis where the discourse centred on how illiterate somalis were and how illiteracy is making it difficult for them to integrate; A non somali reseacher at a local university undertook to investigate; his findings were the opposite; illiteracy levels were lower among somalis compared to other groups.

That is on education; when it comes to unemployment; the employment rate is low;the situation is dire; welfare benefits is the main source of income:

We could discern one contributing factor; welfare provisions - put in place to enhance equity- is a better payoff than paying jobs. But, this has nothing to do with somalis. It applies to everyone.

Somali migration to United States itself hasn't been studied/explored in depth, let alone education specific research. It urgently needs addressed though.

I'm not surprised that illiteracy was labeled on them. It happens here as well, and it frustrates me that experienced psychosocial professionals can't distinguish between illiteracy and language barriers often or simply understanding the process of acculturation that they expect to take place over night. In the case of my people, it might never happens lol...at best they become bicultural, bringing it's own set of issues.

SummerRain, it was in the news a few years ago; Politically motivated discourse. The theory is that somalis find work/integrate in MN and London unlike in Sweden, where the unemployment rate is high. This is probably true but the reasons given are far from the truth; rigid labour market regulations. The right wants to overhaul the social democratic model and apply so called market solutions; i.e. erase equity as a guiding star for the Welfare state. The truth is somewhere in between; in the US and UK, one could work and at the same time get welfare. There are many employers who are tied to the black market economy. In addition, its not uncommon that the man takes a job while the woman claims benefits while still living together; In Sweden, this is almost impossible.

P.s. Somali owned business start-ups in Sweden is not lower than among other communities.
