Opening a business in Somalia/Somaliland

Postby Methylamine » Sun May 04, 2014 5:43 pm

What industries are in demand back home? What type of business that requires low investment (~$10,000), would yield decent profit margins, aside from restaurants, electronics, and clothing shops?

Depends on where you're opening your business. If you're opening a business near a major highway you need to have everything trucks and travellers will want.
For a farming town near the rivers you need everything that has to do with farming. Business in Hargeisa, xamar, Bosaaso you need to provied urban products like electronics they are in big demand.

I was thinking urban areas, specifically Hargeisa and Xamar. You say electronics is in demand, but last time I was in Hargeisa, I saw cell phone/computer shops on every corner, not to mention the two major network providers have the market on lock. I'm assuming the same phenomenon is happening in Xamar as well.

Don't open up a business where you will require physical labour or manufacturing. These people are lazy as fuck. They will ask you to pay them tomorrow's pay while not working today. They will go buy khat with it and not show up to work. Unless you have Bantus workers, don't think about it.

What is needed back home are professional services like consulting and simple household products like soaps, juices, toilet paper, etc

Opening up a business in Somalia is very risky and not because of conflict but because alot of the people there are lazy and khat addicts. Not to mention the bribery and being robbed by your own brother. I would only hire kids aged 12 -17 or females. Males above 18 become animals

Yeah that's true, hiring Somalis for physical labour is a recipe for disaster. Consulting wouldn't work because that requires professionals, who would probably want a higher than average wage to work in Somalia. Karate school isn't a bad idea, laakin where would you find a Somali who knows karate, or a karate expert who's willing to work back home. Private security could also be a good idea, collect $20/month from each house and have a couple skinnies with xabads patrolling certain xaafads all day and night. Probably give some qurbajoogs some peace of mind of moving back home

Meth,

Start a trades school

Hilaac,

Sometimes you need to dig a hole or place tiles on the floor. They wont even do that

These men older than 18 should get out of the workforce

Same country retard. Open up a fish farm if your imaginative (Hargeisa is landlocked) or truck/bus/taxi company. Easy money.

Meth

All the money making businessess would cost you more than 10k bro.

Abdijohnson

Sxb don't think of the somalis back home like the ones in the west who don't have to worry about feeding a kid or not eating tonight.
People back home work hard to get their daily sugar for the morning tea and canjeero. With good paying jobs they could get things running up in no time.
Geeljires walking over 200kms to get their medics is no laziness bro.

$10,000 is too small for a business those days. I have a better idea invest in a company as a shareholder with a minimum 30% / 50% return yearly which equals
$3000/$5000 and you could withdraw your share anytime + profits.

I was thinking of investing in the energy sector but would need lots of money to do that, never the less my goal is to introduce clean energy back home.

Geothermal heating and cooling systems are very cheap and could cost you less than 10k for each home.

this point, is what discourages me. I never accept under any circumstances to bribe some one!! my halal money wont mix with haram activity such bribery.

also, yes you will be robbed by closes person to you in back home.

the only people you can deal with are, as they call , another qurba jog. a person or people who got used to law and regulations and consequences.

bad idea to do bussness out there unless, haram ta iyo halal sha inad kala je'aleyn.
