Qatar's new $15Bn airport

Postby hydrogen » Thu May 22, 2014 9:50 am

A flydubai budget airline jet carrying passengers from Dubai touched down at midday at the Hamad International Airport.

The flight was preceded by a Qatar Airways plane that landed at the airport with four ministers and civil aviation officials on board.

Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority chief Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al-Noaimi told AFP that the seaside airport, whose construction began in 2007 with 50,000 workers, was built at a cost $15.5bn.

Initially, the facility will only be open to 10 airlines, including flydubai, with other carriers including Qatar Airways expected to use it from May 27, airport officials say.

Named after Qatar’s former emir, the airport had originally been scheduled to open on April 1 last year, but this was delayed after it failed to meet new security standards.

The airport, which replaces the old Doha International, will initially be able to handle 30 million passengers per year, and its sponsors hope to expand that figure to 50 million by the time work finishes in 2020.

It spreads over 29 square kilometres (11.2 square miles), and features two runways stretching 4.85 kilometres (three miles) and 4.25 kilometres (2.64 miles).

The terminal has a total surface of 60 hectares.

Qatar, a wealthy oil and gas producer, has made huge investments in infrastructure to establish itself as an international hub before it hosts the Fifa World Cup in 2022.

These guys are seriously brain dead, for $15 billion dollers for an airport isn't needed for a small dot on the map.

Good. I always thought their airport was kinda small. Especially when compared to Dubai's. They want to compete with Dubai.

Starkast don't be jealous. It's not their fault you're a qaxooti. They are gearing up to be a trade hub so they can be prepared for the oil running out.

Trade hub ? $15 billion, do you actually know how much this money is ? Even $1 billion is too much for a airport.
Also why would be i be jealous my fellow arabs have locked SL recognition for anther 50 years. All unionists owe them + Egypt. I just question their mentality when they make such projects.

Can you go one thread without mentioning SL? What has SL got to do with this? Dad bey meeli buktaa.

If they spend $1 billion or $150 billion, they can afford it. They produce nothing except gas and oil. No art, no culture, no science, no technology. They're relying on spectacle (like the rest of the fat gulf arabs) to draw investors and businesses.

There can only be one Dubai in the Gulf. Just like their can only be one Hong Kong or singapore. Dubai has already established it self as a trading city with its port and tourism. Qatar is to late they should have put the money in their savings fund, because they will soon become like Bahrain. Believe it or not Bahrain is building a wind farm to make energy for their country, they have already ran out of oil

Question their mentality? They have the money! Why not! How different are they from rich adoon americans? Bling bling--spend spend spend-- and before u know it-- the oil well is dry and they all go back to their slums in the deserts. :eat:
