But tiny britain ruled the world almost a century ago. The only natural resource it had was coal. It is three times smaller than Somalia and yet the amount of influence it had was staggering. You might think that's another unfair example but I will ask why?
Its because of that very reason they had to venture out of their land, brutally colonize other lands whose peaceful people were less technologically advance than them and steal their resources. Britain's current world status is build on of the foundation of hundreds of years of pillaging and plundering innocent cultures, so I really wouldn't compare us to them, or wish our country was more like them. If anything its the opposite, I'm grateful we're nothing like them.
So why are we speaking english instead of vice versa?
ummm....because British Empire colonized many countries in almost every continent and spread their language across the world? I'm just spitballing here, I ain't a historian, its just a wild guess.
