Mobile phone usage in South-Central, Puntland & Somaliland

Postby XimanJaale » Tue Jul 29, 2014 4:28 am

Telecommunication infrastructure in Somalia is booming. We are ahead of many African countries.

A nationally representative face-to-face survey of 2,000 Somalis aged 15 and older was conducted in January-February 2013 to better understand media usage habits. Researchers found the Somali media environment to be “unexpectedly sophisticated.” Levels of media use were higher than expected, due to the strong role of Somali diaspora and a lack of government regulation. In all, 72% of Somalis say they own a mobile phone (79% South-Central, 73% Puntland, 56% Somaliland).
In terms of regionally in Somalia the highest usage of mobile phone is South-Central with a whooping 79% followed by Puntland with a whooping 72% and the Somaliland with a low score of 56%.
82% of the population has used SMS messaging
55% have sent or received an email
47% have listened to the radio on a mobile device
34% have accessed the internet (a good number of Somali language sites helps)
29% interacted with social media (Facebook use is very widespread)
13% have watched mobile video
51% of those in Mogadishu go online at least weekly (35% in South-Central Somalia, 9% Somaliland, 3% Puntland)

There are other statistics on TV, Radio, Internet etc on Somalia: http://www.bbg.gov/wp-content/media/201 ... iefing.pdf

Most of these people are being exposed to the fake lifestyle in the West via the internet on their mobiles, and this fuels Tahriib. Widespread Internet use among a naive and ill-educated populace isn't really advisable and should not be cause for celebration.

This is true, when I was in Hargeisa 2007 I didn't see much people using Mobile phones apart from the ones that had nothing but a torch light, now I always see my cousins and aunties from back home using it via facebook and they are really active on social networking.

 I was so shocked at how prominent phones actually were. Most would in fact use their phones to purchase almost every/any item other than small groceries. You would even find the elderly; two, three, six, laba nine four-ing the zaad account numbers.

You totally sound like a idiot. These idiots going on a tahriib are doing out of selfish reasons not because they are tricked and groomed by the internet and social media's. Why should Somalia live in the middle ages times just because you think the internet will attract people to go on a tahriib? The only way to stop tahriib is making more jobs, and having internet is useful to create jobs.
