I was inspired by Sophisticate's thread on S/net characters and the Hip/H world.
Hablayahoow hadmaad guursan doontaa? ( When will you ladies tie the knot?) was a box office hit in the 1980s . It is perhaps the most seen play in the genre of Somali love.
The play was created by the great Maxamuud Tukaale Ismaciil. Originally, It starred the late Abdinasir Macalin who in my opinion had the best somali voice; qalaafe, daawada nafteeydaay and badda cas). He was replaced by the Allah ha u naxriiste Abdi Salaad Beerdilaacshe). The earlier version also starred Maryan Mursal Ciise. She was replaced by Saado Cali Warsame.

The characters/actors:
Hibo Maxamed Hudoon aka Hibo Nuura (Cawo); A down to earth, cultural conservative and traditional woman. She will go with the choice of her parents as regards marriage. She is a stay at home woman who is in waiting. She is an innocent woman from the countryside.
Saado ( Isma hubo). She is a modern day rebellious woman. She prefers to go with her heart. She wants a man of her age who loves rock and roll.
Abdi Cali Bacalwaan (caafi) Is the male version of Hibo ( Cawo). A cool guy who wants a traditional somali woman. His shukaansi lines are in line with traditions.
Beerdilaachse ( Hansi been); he is the party guy. He loves dancing and is a feature on the night scene.
Qamar Abdullahi Harawo (caraaba). She is a gold digger who loves the dough. It is wallet size that matters to her. Not the size of her heart. Sugar daddy= no problem
Feynus Sheikh Daahir ( Caga ma dhige). She is the agony aunt . Her character is almost like that of a modern day matchmaker.
Salaad cali Barakoow Buule ( Xaaji beeble). He is a seaman with plenty of experience and enough money to appeal to younger women. His dance moves are from 1930s and has no problem with being sugar daddy.
The play also starred, Fadumo muuse wanaag (coleey), Mohamud tukaale ( Caraale). Aw kuku (Cabaade), Daahir Caaje (ciro daba), Ahmed iftiinshe (adeege)
The somalinet culture department is planning to stage this play again. We have been overwhelmed by the responses from potential actors. Having considered all the merits of all the applicants, we have made the following short list.
We shall audition for the following roles;
Female characters
a) Cawo; 28-35 year old somali woman who loves tradition. She will go for any guy that her parents suggests. She was raised in the countryside and thinks city life sucks.
b) Isma hubo ; 28-35 year old woman who loves partying. Her choice is a man of her age who preferably can dance to the tunes of R&B and Rock N Roll. Money is not issue. It is attitude, yeah!
c) Caraabo ; 28-35 year old somali woman who loves the dough. She think happiness can be bought with money. She is very seductive and difficult to resist. She is very sensual and will do everything to put her hands on the wallet even if that means touching willies.
d) Caga ma dhige ; She is a modern urban woman. She is a matchmaker and part time agony aunt.
Male characters
e) Caafi 30-40. He is the opposite of Cawo, a traditional guy who wants to go the traditional way when it comes to courting and marriage. He is well educated but poor.
f) Hansi Been 28-35 man. He is the party guy who rents a BMW to impress the ladies. He wears modern day clothes, hates the macawiis and is often a feature on the part scene.
g) Xaaji Beebe 40-50 who has travelled the world. He made money in shipping. His moves are old fashioned. He wants to have short term fun. He loves the company of young women and he knows that his wallet will speak for itself.
