Some Isaaq refugees fled to Dirdhaba in 1988 while the SNM controlled Dirdhaba from 1982 to 1988 when Afweyne and Mengistu signed a peace treaty and the SNM had to move their military base out of Ethiopa. When the SNM left the Oromo took over the Town and to this day they run while the SNM a year later took over Awdal, parts of Maroodi Jeex, parts of Togdheer, Sool and Sanaag.
