Mohamed Mohamud sentenced after revelations of warrantless overseas wiretaps and lawyers’ accusations of entrapment


An Oregon man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for plotting to bomb a crowded holiday event in Portland’s town square in 2010.

Mohamed Mohamud was sentenced Wednesday in US district court in Portland in the plot that actually was an FBI sting.

Agents posing as al-Qaida recruiters supplied the fake car bomb that the former Oregon State University student tried to set off at an annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

Agents targeted Mohamud after the then-teenager wrote for an online jihadi magazine.

Mohamud’s lawyers contend he was the victim of entrapment, a defense rejected at a trial last year.

The sentencing was pushed back after the government disclosed that warrantless overseas wiretaps helped make its case. The defense unsuccessfully sought a new trial.

It is a shame to see this young life thrown away. I wish I could know what caused him to turn into a monster. He had a comfortable life in Oregon, went to university, was among his family and friends in a land that granted him citizenship rights. But this bizarre young man was willing to discard all that to blow up women and children lighting the town christmas tree. Why? Is he a sociopath—a boy who sought the thrill of murder and found means and motive in radical Islam? Was he a normal young mind hijacked by a violent faith? I agree that locking up this disturbed young man is in the interest of the public safety. But an even greater service to the public safety can be accomplished if he was throughly studied, for his type are sadly prevalent among diaspora Somali youth.
