Muqdisho Port Expansion

Postby GeoSeven » Sat Dec 20, 2014 11:10 am

$170 million project (I think). Multiplying capacity by 30% within a few years.

Mogadishu Port Container Terminal (MPCT) is a corporation duly incorporated under the Somali laws.

MPCT has been awarded a 15 years concession to exclusively handle all traffic of containers at Mogadishu Port. Since the contract was awarded late 2012, MPCT has grown into a productive port operator.

Thanks to the Somali Government efforts, Mogadishu Port is once again recognized as the key centre for international trade in the country. With its well established reputation for efficiency, reliability and professionalism, MPCT has a bright future and will continue to participate at the forefront of regional growth.

MPCT has plans to multiply its capacity by a factor 30 in the next 3 to 5 years, pendent of the proper approvals from the Somali Government, bringing Mogadishu to the level of the main transhipment hubs of the Indian Ocean.

In addition, and to cope with the lack of qualified labour force in Somalia, MPCT, plans to launch Somalia Merchant Maritime Academy in Mogadishu, to train local youth as skilled seafarers. Qualified trainers from all over the world and marine experts will provide the core of the teaching body in order to rise a whole new generation of skilled Somalis, with true employment opportunities.

MPCT acts as a reliable gateway to international trade network. It provides efficient services, reliable facilities, modern infrastructures and overall international quality standards.

Mashallah. I do sometimes feel though that Mogadishu is the only city in Somalia. Surely, the money would be better spent on improving or building other coastal towns around the country like Hobyo or Kismayo? You shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket.

There is nothing free in this world, you pay what little cash you have to hire companies or you accept loan/long term contruct from the companies "hay wareerin" or "hafto" . The best way is to pay cash. if its loan it must be approved by the Somali federal state Representatives , Somalia is already one of the heavily indebted poor countries it can not take any more loan with out consultation. Our Somaliland state separitist govermment may not pay any loan taken after 1991 and other federal states have similar policies. if its long term contruct with foreign shipping company its not too bad as long as the deal is mutually beneficial. The question is who is funding the project ?

The entire of Somalia owes 3 billion dollars, a tiny amount of money compared with other nations. But of course other nations have industries.

WTF ! $170 million ma lacag baa ? And this is foreign investment not "gift".

Back to the topic. This contract was way before when the turkish company took over the port. I think this company is no more around and the contract is canceled. Furthermore the expansion would block Xamar-Jajab's and Xamarweyne's access to the ocean not to mention the increase of traffic jams out of the port, as the port is located in the heart of Mogadishu. It doesn't even make sense to expand the current port. A new bigger port somewhere close to Ceel-macaan would be ideal.

Gjaamac

Sakaaro inteeda waa ku duq, $170 is huge compare to the amount of Somalia Anual budget or other local generated revenues.

Liquid

Afweyne used The three billion loan. Somalia did not take any loan after afwayne. Our state wont pay any many used on military upgrading during the 80s But we may pay fair share of loans used on Other Development projects.

Masha Allah. Well done. In sha Allah Muqdisho will be restored to its former glory. We all must build Muqdisho regardless of clan, it is our nation's capital.

Liquid, I think we need a furbished urban center with fairly adequate infrastructure to accommodate, at least for the time being. Besides, it's more than likely we're going to hear about projects of all kinds throughout major cities. Resurfacing of interstate highways, roads, building schools, airports and smaller landing strips.

You're right, there's a Turkish company now. Contracts are always being assigned and retracted, it's confusing. I personally don't care who the contract is awarded to, so long as they get the job done. Yeah, the old city's ocean view will consist of port cranes, ships and concrete...ugly to be honest.
