One person is in life-threatening condition and six others are injured after a Calgary New Year's Eve party ended in gunfire early Thursday morning.
Police were called to a home in the 1900 block of 36th Street S.W. shortly after 5 a.m., when several people reported hearing gunshots in the area.
The shooting occurred in Calgary's quiet Killarney neighbourhood, located about six kilometres southwest from the downtown core.
Upon arrival, police found five people with gunshot wounds inside and outside the home. Two others later showed up at nearby hospitals, also suffering gunshot wounds.
Police told CTV Calgary's Ina Sidhu that six of the victims had minor injuries, but one is seriously injured.
From outside the home, Sidhu reported that approximately 50 people were at the house party at the time of the shooting. Several partygoers were taken for questioning at a police station.
The area around the house has been blocked by crime tape and police vehicles as a forensics team investigates.
Officials have yet to provide a description of the suspect or suspects, but are expected to offer an update at an afternoon news conference.
Police told Sidhu there is no risk to the public, explaining those involved knew each other.
In the meantime, police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 403-266-1234, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
