Heathrow airport overtaken by Dubai as world’s busiest

Total of 68.9 million passengers passed through Dubai International, compared with 67.8 million at Heathrow

Heathrow has lost its crown as the busiest airport in the world for international passenger traffic. The oil-rich Gulf city of Dubai has knocked London off the top spot, figures from the Airports Council International show.

A total of 68.9 million passengers had passed through Dubai International compared with 67.8 million at Heathrow as of December 22, despite a late slowdown in traffic with one important destination, trouble-hit Russia.

“Given the traffic achieved in the first 11 months, together with some of the busiest days on record in December, we are confident of ending the year above the 70 million mark and confirming our position as the world’s busiest international airport,” said Paul Griffiths, the British-born chief executive of Dubai Airports. He added: “Looking forward to 2015, the prospects remain exceedingly bright, and we expect to maintain the growth achieved this year in the next 12 months.”

Figures from the airport operator for November showed that passenger traffic was up 4.3% year on year to 5.5 million.

Nop, Dubai have no oil.
It's declining but it still has oil:
Dubai has approximately 4 billion barrels of oil in reserve and holds the second place in terms of oil reserves in the UAE. Dubai Petroleum Co (DPC) is the main operator in the emirate. Dubai’s oil production peaked in 1991 at 410,000 b/d and has been steadily declining ever since.

Dubai doesn't even rely on oil as much as before most of their money comes through services and tourism. Diversifying is something all oil producing countries should do.

Dubai GDP is 93% oil free and 71% of Emirates economy is coming from non oil sectors.

Dubai has focused its economy on tourism by building hotels and developing real estate. Port Jebel Ali has the largest man-made harbor in the world and it also developing as hub for service industries like IT and finance. Emirates Airlines, Gigantic investments from businesses all around the world. And goes on.

Dubai's main revenue results from tourism, retail, financial services, international trade, international investments, etc.

Waa ruun..

Last time I landed in Dubai with my friend even thou it was 4am in the morning, I have never seen a longer line then that so far, and it was so unfair because 98% of these people came from 3rd world countries and some of them had to wait in the line like about 2hours. But luckily for us since we had european passport they open special entry lines where there barely is a line.. Dubai might be a rich country but its a shiithole!
