Saudi cleric put fatwa on snowmen

Postby Malachite » Tue Jan 13, 2015 2:32 am

DUBAI (Reuters) - A prominent Saudi Arabian cleric has whipped up controversy by issuing a religious ruling forbidding the building of snowmen, described them as anti-Islamic.

Asked on a religious website if it was permissible for fathers to build snowmen for their children after a snowstorm in the country's north, Sheikh Mohammed Saleh al-Munajjid replied: "It is not permitted to make a statue out of snow, even by way of play and fun."

Quoting from Muslim scholars, Sheikh Munajjid argued that to build a snowman was to create an image of a human being, an action considered sinful under the kingdom's strict interpretation of Sunni Islam.

"God has given people space to make whatever they want which does not have a soul, including trees, ships, fruits, buildings and so on," he wrote in his ruling.

That provoked swift responses from Twitter users writing in Arabic and identifying themselves with Arab names.

"They are afraid for their faith of everything ... sick minds," one Twitter user wrote.

I bet you if you asked this cleric (the one who just publicly pronounced the making of snowman as a cardinal sin) his views on men banging livestocks such as camels, sheep, etc., or worse yet sexually violating five year old boys, he would straight up and without the least hesitation tell you, it is all permissible in Islam and in the way of evidence would probably quote a hadith or two. That is Saudi Arabia for you!

the sheik is right and if you disagree then you must be a dumb foking idiot.

the whole idea of a snowman is that it resembles a human and by that, Islamic ruling is very clear.

Statues are prohibited in islam so by extension snow man is haram.

People only criticise islamic ruling but I wish they would be aware of jewish halacha ruling and they would see how islam is middel between secularist and extreme jewish law.

most of you accept the law that states, that a corporation is human yet complain about a snowman fatwa.

We live among immoral people that find morality repugnant.

i derive my law from allah and my ethics comes from god, where you stand

this is not about saudi arabia or radical muslims.

islamic tradition is clear about snowman
