Ximan those guys were banned or are being spied on just in case they say something sacrilegious.

I'm more interested to see the opinion of the diehard Somali preservationists i.e. TheMailMan, zumaale and itrah.

This is going to be entertaining to watch.

Sis, unfortunately not enough research has been done on Somali oral history (sadly that is all we got) to find out the pre-Islamic religious history of our ancestors. Like with other ancient societies that adopted Abrahamic faiths, it is a history that was never glorified or even worthy of recording.

What I can confidently argue that is that we were have been Muslim for almost 1200-1300 years. I base this on the fact the founding fathers of many Somali clans are Islamic/Arabic in nature, ignore the nicknames that are a common feature of Somali society. These founding fathers lived more than a millennium ago as science is starting to evince through DNA testing of Somalis. Furthermore, their burial places are concentrated in the Northern coast of Somalia, close to the source of Islam. Dir/Hawiye and Darood in particular.

However, the words Waaq and Eebe are ubiquitous among Somalis and looking at our nomadic culture, it is evident that we were superficially Muslim and retained a lot of our pagan customs. The Waaqa religion exists among a minority of Oromos and other isolated 'Cushites'; considering that they live inland away from coastal influences, I would argue that they exemplify the traditional religious beliefs of 'Cushitic' Horners before the advent of Islam.

Fascinating stuff. So the next question I have for you is: Are Somalis a branch of Oromo or their own separate group? :lupe: We're all ears.

you do know that is not possible. the farthest back the darood geneology (for example) goes back is about 700 years. I have not heard of any clan that can trace back their ancestry to 1300 years and still have arabic names. its also been shown that even the darood clan (which claims to have been founded by an arab), the oldest generations are only known by their somali names. and the names are archaic somali names that are not used today. even if you wanna chalk that up as nicknames, I could similarly argue that those are not nicknames but rather their real names and that arabic names did not exist then because islam was not that influential.

I think the earliest reasonable time you can place islam in Somalia is about the year 1200 or 1300. not 1200-1300 years ago.

Maliprince, that is an absolute lie. Islam entered Somalia about the 8th century through trade and commerce. The Somalis embraced Islam and slowly moved down South towards the Koonfur region of the country over the centuries.

Somalia and Islam are inseparable

Geneaologies can be constructed at any poiny.what we do know, though, from a plethora of historical documents is that somalis were followers islam as early as the 8th century.
