Btw i meant that Somalis are Africans (i.e we live in africa) that happen to speak Arabic. I.e us speaking Arabic doesn't make us Arab necessarily.

Bari you mean as in Puntland regions? And what part of the population there speak Arabic "proficiently"? If any, it's folks that lived in the Middle East for ages. The only second group that can be said to have a linguistic/grammatical knowledge of Arabic language is the wadaado who teach/learn Naxwo (Arabic grammar) in mosques and Islamic schools and all that group of Somalis (which by the way is similar in all Somali regions) know is how to construct, correct & analyze Fusxa Arabic sentences in order to learn the Koran, hadeth & fiqh etc and they can't speak Arabic proficiently.

Star, awoowe, I am not sure if you have even been back home & know what % of the locals can even understand basic Arabic.

PS: The official Somali language is Somali. And that story where Arabic, English & Italian are second & third languages are just a make-believe we created in order to get financial aid from the West (since Somali is written in Latin & Somaliland was a British colony), Italy (as the South was Italian colony) & the Arabs (since Somalia is a Muslim majority country and Somalia was a member of the Arab League, which we know as to why we joined it etc). Yeah, come at me now, bro.

Most Somalis don't speak Arabic at all, although many of us can understand some Arabic as a result of reading the Quran and Hadith's. But that doesn't make us Arab.

We are Somalis and we should preserve our Somali language, culture, heritage, and ethnicity

But I would encourage more Somalis to learn Arabic in order to become more proficient in understanding the Quran and Hadith's. We should not rely on translations in order to understand Allah's revelation

Anzeloti - Coastal Somalis are more likely to speak Arabic. That a more logical argument you should of presented. Also i'm sure your grandparents etc probably spoke Arabic.

lol @ some of the responses. Guys...do you seriously deny that there are MANY more Somalis claiming to be Arab than the few you see online? I have seen plenty here on this forum, and have many Somalis telling me that they are half-arab, or actually saying no, Somalis are Arab.

Evol yes there are lots of Somalis who claim they are Arab, just as there are many Spaniards who erroneously claim to be Germanic. But it doesn't change the fact that the overwhelming majority of Somalis view themselves as just that: Somalis. From Djibouti down to Mandera, and from Dir Dhabe east to Benaadir, the majority of ethnic Somalis correctly identify as being Somali.
