Not only can it go both ways, it is my observation that it DOES go both ways. It's not a gender issue, it's a mentality issue. Whether you want to call it self-hate, or just having a "problem with the mirror", or just not being attracted to your own ethnic group (while not necessarily hating your culture) -- these are all behavioral traits I've observed in both genders across all ethnic groups. Thankfully, I think East African girls (namely Somali/Afar/Oromo) are so beautiful and extremely attractive, and it would be no different had I not been Somali.

Look at it from a economic point of view. What do men look for in a potential spouse?

What do women look for in a man?

- Security
