If removing Arabic from being an official language will instill in us a national identity I'm all for it. But alas, there is no such cure. As for Arabic I see no threat it poses to Somali, in fact I believe we should strengthen that tie to the Arabic language.
It would be good for somalia to be a bilingual society.
it would be good for somalia to be a society that celebrates its own culture. talk to me when the arabs are speaking af somali and making it an official language in their country. till then, I only want to see af somali as the official language of SOMALIA.

How many millions speak Arabic and how many speak Somali. 'Nuf said.

Of course that's no reason to speak Arabic, but speaking more than 1 language could only help you and not hinder you.

I myself signed up for Online Spanish classes, since it seems like all of Mexico and Latin America has decided to move to the US en masse. Tu comprendes?

Arabic is the language of the Qur'an. There is nothing wrong with people learning other languages.
Learning another language does not eradicate a culture.

Do me a favour. Get an arab person and a Somali person from Somalia, preferably from the miyi, and say that to their faces. Then time them and see which of them can keep a straight face longest.

If I had the resources and desire maybe, but I don't think either would have a problem. I think this stark contrast is in your head.

I recently went to a Somali restaurant to buy food, while I was waiting there was an old man in the restaurant noisily attracting attention to himself. Very old, with big black sun glasses, looked a bit homeless. He was drinking soup with a spoon. He kept speaking a lot of gibberish, changing English to Arabic. When he spoke Arabic, he would enunciate the words and speak with pride, louder, even gesticulating with fingers to express his point. The Other Somalis male and female in the restaurant paid a particular attention whenever the old man spoke Arabic. They had this pride, and envy expression on their faces. Like they wished they could speak a decent Arabic like him. Some of them even clapped hands. I chuckled remembering this thread. :)
