How do you discipline kids nowadays?

I am just curious to how people discipline their kids nowadays? Do you follow the saying 'spare the rod, spoil the child'? Which is, u gotta beat the shit out of ur kids for them to become productive members of society.

I ask this because, couple of weeks ago I went to visit a family member who has a little son. While I was there, the kid got out of hand and started talking back to his mom. Mom came downstairs and got dad. Dad was talking to the son like he ran the house (he is only 8yrs old).

15 minutes of arguing with the kid and threatening him with timeout and taking his video games and his iPad. Finally got him to do a simple task.

Wallahi I was shocked, this is not how I grew up, the FIILO (cord extension was the first thing), not trying to reason or timeouts.

So for those of u who got kids, what is an appropriate way of dealing with kid's?

Example and tough discipline is the best way. Personally I'm very short-fused to bullshit, and I make sure he knows it. It's important to be balanced though, you don't want to raise fuleys

When I become a father. I'll have a four step procedure:
1. Verbal warning
2. Angry verbal warning.
3. Confiscate game console
4. Flex my knuckles and unbuckle my belt and instill some discipline the good ol' fashioned way.

Make sure to use the tiger mom's rule.

Make sure they know you are the parent and you basically own them until they are old enough to make their own decisions. I see some moms who are afraid of their kids and its quite sad.

You don't have to be physical abusive to install the fear ib your kids.

-Steal their nose and say you will never return it back to them.
-threaten to dismember all their toys
-hold them upside down by the ankle until they pass out
-Leave them in the middle of the wood, that usually works.

Or talk to them calmly.

I am against abusive parents, but you also have to draw the line somewhere and not let your kid run free and do whatever the hell he feels like doing.

If you don't straighten him out when he's young, your little precious Abdi/Farah would grow up to become a menace to society and u have no one, but ur piss poor parenting to blame.
