Us Somalis got some boring ass names. It's always arabic and from the kitab. None of my friends or family has a non-arabic name. I was wondering what Somali names are out there?

Solid,

Shar is Arabic but the ending 'ma arke' is Somali.

BlackVelvet,

I actually believe her name was Araweello and not Caraweello but I could be wrong. It's often used as a nickname in the north. Bossy and tomboyish girls ayaa loogu yeedhaa Araweello, after the infamous Queen that ruled parts of the Somali peninsula. My mother's sister was called Araweello and is still called to this day.

I've seen it written with a C

It's actually a pretty name. That the only female ruler we remember gets such a bad rep is disappointing

I am seriously considering this now. My future daughter, Arawello

If I have one that just moved to no.2 on the list

war qolada maha tahay? I find it hard to believe there could be ZERO somali names in your entire family. Miyaa tiiheen barwani mise reer xamar?

At least in my family, most of the girls are given traditional somali names. very rarely do girls get carab names (I think it might be because we don't know many and there are only a few carab girl names in the quran). its the boys that unfortunately are given the carab names. with that phenomenon becoming more common nowadays. I think in the older days, even the boys were given mostly traditional somali names. the only reason I theorized that is from my own male lineage, alot of the names are traditional somali names. names like farah and very old school somali names that are rarely used today. its mostly a trend today where the boys are being given carab names.

thank goodness I was born with a traditionally somali name. both my first and last name are somali. thus I move thru the anti-islamic America covertly. I can't imagine what it must be like for you guys who have to go thru airports with names like Abdi Maxamed.
