Ismahan,
Veganism is an extreme lifestyle/diet much the same as fruitaranism, raw food diet, paleo etc etc.
A diet that is deficient in essential vitamins & minerals forcing you into a lifetime of expensive supplementation?
A diet that tells you not to eat honey or wear wool because it's "cruel"
A diet that kills your social life estranging you from your family, friends, your culture..
Are you sure you still want to jump on the qaafila?
It won’t be easy and I haven’t jumped ship just yet. I watched several documentaries on veganism and its benefits; I just think I need to do more self-education. I do believe one can be healthy while consuming meat, poultry etc. granted consumed in moderation. The thing is most of our meat is treated and by the time it makes to our dinner table, is very deficient in nutrition, making the benefits very small. My biggest conflict is the ethical side. We rarely question where our halaal meat comes from and the pre-slaughtering conditions and the wholesomeness of such food. Proper Zabiha practices go beyond just the slaughtering rituals and given the rise of large scale slaughter houses and farms, violations against what the religion advices are inevitable. Most times the animals are housed in crowded spaces, slaughtered in front of other animals or given hormones to increase milk supply for our consumption….the calves are taken away and feed formula and eventually become veal.
On aspect of veganism/vegetarianism that I do like is, if more people adopted such diet, there will be demand for higher quality foods. In such an event, this will force the government to revise policies and lower the price of organic foods.
Ps plant based diets are proven to lower chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes. Its a no brainer that we are adviced to increase our fruit and veggie intakes.
