Stop with this "institutionalized racism" garbage. There's nothing stopping you from getting up and achieving something with your life in America. There have been loads of success stories of Nigerian and Senegalese immigrants coming to America and achieving their goals.

In fact, Nigerians are the most well-educated group in the USA. So don't come to me with this institutionalized racism bullshit.

And when I mentioned the Punjabi Sikhs, I was implying that the wrongful opinion of a redneck racist White Man is irrelevant and we shouldn't base our identity off of that. If a White guy from South Carolina mistakenly thinks that Somalis are "Black"....then we shouldn't identify ourselves as that. Don't carry on arguments you can't finish. Nigerians are "Black" yet they're very successful and educated. So don't you dare blame "racism" for the behavior and shortcomings of AA's. It's no one's fault except theirs.

The same way how Somali failures and shortcomings are OUR FAULT and not the fault of the Habashis, Whites, Arabs or anyone else.

Gegiroor and SahanGalbeed and Advo are extremely condescending towards AA's. They will think of every excuse in the book to normalize their bad behavior.

But you'll never see me do this with Somalis. Our Somali people are deeply flawed, and our civil war and suffering is a direct result of our own bad behavior. We can't really blame anyone except ourselves. I as a proud Somali can admit that and acknowledge it. But as soon as someone says something negative about AA's, people here want to jump and defend this behavior, and make excuses on behalf of them.

As for Somalis and how they self-identify themselves, its as Somali-American. I don't think Somalis have a problem with African Americans, we just don't see ourselves as the same or having a collective experience, language, culture and ethnicity etc. Better yet the African American has more in common with his European American compatriot. In fact, one could say that the relationship between both groups is soured by the fact that Somalis participated in the enslavement of Bantu people, by selling them to the Arabs. One could claim that global reparations would mean that Somalis that were complicit in this and would have to pay up, along with a heap load of other Africans, Asians and Europeans that also bought, sold and oppressed people of West-Central African decent. No one has their hands clean. Everyone knows if we go further back to Asians and Europeans being slaves, the world as we know it would be bankrupt, God knows they are greedy too and want their dues paid. In fact, we should be clear that we need to solve our own problems before we start calling out other ethnicities. These topics need to stop.

It is a news to me that Somalis participated the slavery of Bantu. I thought it was Arabs, and at that time the Southern tip-part of Somalia was under the Oman Sultanate!

P.S. Sophisticate, I agree with majority of your comment, but how much can we be obsessed with AAs, sister? Come'n sister, common sense is missing from these endless threads that Somali Ethno-centric patriots are promoting without any breaks. SonOfANomad does have a point though, a significant percentage of Somali Youth living in the US are emulating black (African American) culture. Other immigrant groups tend to be proud of their culture but not Somalis.

To be frank, if this doesn't stop, Somali Americans will assimilate into the AA community in a couple of decades.
