BTW, in Sweden, there are at least two hospitals that perform hymenoplasty( hymen reconstruction/repair). Most of the clients are from the middle east and East Africa.
Are these hymen reconstructions done on the public purse or do the patients pay for it? Since you mentioned the clients of these procedures are also from East Africa, which specific country are they from? In another thread, you mentioned American Somali men flooding Sweden for marriages, ehem ehem, bal Intaa aan ku reebo.

shame on Indonesia. You'd think the biggest Islamic country population wise would have some sense.

It's not just through imtercourse that a female looses her hymen anyway

Machiaveli2,

There are both private and public clinics that carry out hymen repair operations. Most of these are aesthetic private plastic operations clinics that also provide other services. In some cases (e.g. life threatening such as obstetric fistula or necessity such as in the case of malformation/ distortion/ injures) they are reimbursed through the health care system. A few yearsago, an ad hoc/pilot clinic to specifically cater to the victims of cultural taboos was inaugurated at Karolinka ( the top university hospital). There are two main operations carried out here; hymen repair for taboo non-virgins – which basically mean that bleeding (fake) will happen during the first night- and repairs of the fibromuscular tubular due to circumcision. This is funded through taxes.

Patients: there are obviously some somali patients. These are mainly younger women who have never been cut or have undergone the minor/milder (?) form genital mutilations. The vast majority is from the middle east though.

The doctors face a dilemma. There is a legal and moral issue related to this issue. There is an argument within the medical community by providing repairs, social norms/taboos are strengthened. There is also the question of whether a doctor should be engaged in these kind of schemes.

This is an abstract of a paper published in reproductive health matters (2010). Since then there have been more:

"An important determinant of family honour in many cultures is the chastity of women, with much importance attributed to virginity until marriage. The traditional proof of virginity is bleeding from the ruptured hymen, which has led some women to request genital surgery to "restore" virginity, or hymen repair. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Swedish health care providers have had experience of patients requesting this surgery. Questionnaires were sent to 1,086 gynaecologists, midwives, youth welfare and social officers, and school nurses and doctors in four Swedish cities. Of the 507 who returned the questionnaire, 271 had seen patients seeking virginity-related care. Of these, 14 had turned the patients away; 221 had made 429 referrals, mostly to a welfare officer or a gynaecologist; and 26 had referred patients to a plastic surgeon. Nine gynaecologists had carried out such surgery themselves. Swedish authorities have to date focused on this issue primarily from a social and legal perspective. No guidelines exist on how health professionals should deal with requests for surgery to restore virginity. Further research is needed on how best to meet the needs of this group of patients in a multi-ethnic society and how to address requests for hymen repair. Without this, medical practitioners and counsellors will remain uncertain and ambivalent, and a variety of approaches will persist."

What's so especial about virgins in military? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

All new recruit who are Virgins should be asked to go get laid cos the front line requires experienced people. Not only with guns but also with men in case they are cought.

Since men's chastity cannot be tested through a mock physical, they should take a lie detecting test.

Oh wait, men's chastity doesn't matter.

Thanks Ina Adeer for your detailed response. The Swedish government seem to be very humane by responding to the needs of these young women who were shunned because of cultural disparity.

Ina Adeer, cultural norms are to blame, in some places, a boy may become the concubine of an adult, but when he reaches adulthood, he is expected to get married to a chaste female. It's a man's world.

I just don't understand why leaders of Muslim countries like Indonesia allow fellow Muslim women be humiliated through these virginity tests? Most of the women who are signing up for these types of tests are from lower ladder of society (poor communities), and they take this humiliation due to the economic conditions that they found themselves in. These types of tests prove the backwardness in some of the Muslim societies, and it provides more ammunition to those who spread Islamophobia.
