By the same logic, mountaineers should be left to die if they injure themselves doing something they knew was dangerous. Racing drivers should be left to burn in their wrecks if the have a crash. Adults and children who play contact sports and get injured should be left at the side of the field to heal their own broken bones, after all, they knew
Seeing a lot of apples and oranges arguments here that don't hold water. For example, I can play that game, too. Why should anyone be asked to foot the bill for the effects of someone playing russian roullette daily? In very likely six days, they will be quite dead. Someone has to clean that mess up, you know. There are insurance benefits to be paid, estates to be probated. It's a stupid analogy........ I should make the distinction between what a health service does and what society allows people to do. The health system should not be in the business of making policy on what people may or may not do. That same restriction does not apply to other branches of our chosen governements. We could, if the will and the brains existed, decide finally that the costs of tobacco use so greatly outweigh any benefits of its use, and ban it outright. But, I'm not a great supporter of fixing the stupidity of people with a hammer....
I would still be highly hypocritical of a government, to collect taxes on a product it deems legal to use and then deny those who use it and pay those taxes, equal health care. highly hypocritical..As for doctors refusing treatment, that's questionable too. Is it ethical for a catholic doctor to refuse a woman contraceptives?
When we start along the road of discrimination, its a looong road, with many victims
