When my family (wife and kids) went to Somalia in 2008, they had taken all painkillers, anti-diarrhea, anti-Malaria, and asthma medicine with them. Immunization is also very important before you go, but I guess in your situation you're already there.

Malaria is rampant in Togdheer, I had malaria bites all over my arms when I went to Burco during the summer holidays of 2012. Strangely enough, I never even saw a single mosquito when I went to Hargeisa.

^ lol No. You had mosquito bites all over your arm. Me too. Malaria exists, it is just FAR less likely than other areas of the horn. I know people who lived in Garissa who had malaria multiple times, but never had it once in Xamar.

It's a veryyy strange thing also regarding mosquitoes in different cities... I lived in Burco for almost a year and use to get demolished by the mosquitoes hourly, but when I visited Hargeisa they were non existent. It was incredible. It's as though they don't like how my blood tastes after all the Burco weather/food/water I had been drinking? I don't know.

I know that now I am eaten on the daily right now (hence my malaria scare), and if I go to visit Burco, I will probably be left alone!

I am very wary about medications back home. I brought my own medical kit: syringes, gauze, antibiotics, gloves, thread for stiches, antibiotics, surgical kit (blades, sterilization etc), Imodium, Flagyll (anti-protozoan meds), thermometer, BPD machine, 3 kinds of antimalarial treatments, Paracetmol, Ibuprofen, etc.

I don't trust the pharmacies. Their meds are either expired, adulterated (cut to reduce effectiveness), or fake.


For food, I ate basically all the locally available food. I wasn't worried about expiration date for most items as long as they were cooked over a heated flame. I am very peculiar about how my food is prepared. I hired a former Italian restaurant chef @ $300 a month just to cook for me. I told him how I liked my food, the sanitation requirements, how to wash my salads in "bottled water" and use a special rinse.

Itrah, Malaria is RAMPANT across most of the Northern areas with the exception of Hargeisa, Ceerigabo and other highland areas but even that is changing with climate change as more areas become warmer and the range of the mosquitoes that carry the bug increases. I was roommates with an antimalarial expert who said most of the Somali peninsula was now endemic with malaria.

meh. i eat everything here. only had shuban first 3 months after that my stomach is a rock now, seems like you just have a case of bad luck babygirl. the foods all fresh, no gmo's. all the junk food comes from dubai which is go, havent had any issues, sbi sucks it doesnt taste like real coke. i drink the pepsi they bring from dubai. medicine is the only thing i dont trust here, or doctors for that matter. if i have a health problem god forbid im running back to canada.
