So we have all heard that we (in Africa) receive medicine and food stuffs that have already expired. So any prudent shopper checks the expiry date on the what they are buying, and confirms that it is 'safe for consumption'.

What is one to do then, when we are being FKED because everything is being modified at origin?

I recently purchased a mini Pringles from one of the supermarkets here (yes, cheat day lol) and the smell as soon as I opened the container was disgusting, I literally retched. I didn't know that could even happen to Pringles... But the expiry date was alright? So I just threw it out..

I recently had a few people complaining to me about SBI (Somaliland Beverage Industry) and how the expiry dates are fine, but the drinks are gross. Yesterday, and I should have taken a photo, there was white film on the inside of one of the mini Coca Cola bottles. My brother asked me to taste the drink because he thought it was just in his head, and it was actually horrible, the aftertaste hung on for hours. Coke doesn't even get like that! Or is it that we've never been exposed to expired sodas? Word is they are re-bottling unsold beverages.


Now I found these documents between a shipper and seller. Tomato paste that expires in 2 years (2017) and buyer is asking that they label expiration for 3 yrs (2018). Not a huge deal you might think, but this is *tomato paste*. Shop keepers will already try to sell this past it's expiration date, taking it into 2 yrs past expiry.

Also people complain about counterfeit/expired medicine back home it was on the news the local government was burning it in a bonfire but with 1-2 pharmacy on every block I wonder how many counterfeit/expired medicine are still on the shelf

You're absolutely right. There's literally a pharmacy or two on every block.

That's scary...building homes with cheap quality goods. And the issue is they won't even sell it to you as anything but top shelf cement. I hope your parents can get that fixed. ....With less compromised tools lol.

I once bought antibiotics for $1 (7000SLS) and I didn't take it when I got home. Price does not determine effectiveness, but that just made me nervous. I took the chance and alhamdulillah got better.

I also bring my make-up and toiletries you listed, pain killers here as well, I have multi vitamins and allergy medicine for my parents. But walahi you can't control being sick if you live here. I was in the hospital recently, and alhamdulillah, if they know what you've got, you better bite the bullet and take what you have to marka hore bisinka qabso.

Lol Somalida waxa mentalka ka yara wada dhigay waa expired products of all kinds, specially expired medical products. I've heard it's quite rampant in Hargeisa, Borama and Burco.

Anyway I am curious about the point you have raised that there is a pharmacy on every corner? I have seen it in Borama on Google maps, I swear I didn't know what to make of it, at one point waxan is idhi, since when did your home town turned into an out patient urban centre. What's even more stranger is that someone ,god knows who marked every pharmacy on Google maps! Yet never bothered to map the schools hospitals and all sorts!

So can anyone who is familiar with the reality on the ground stipulate as to why there are so many pharmacies operating in these cities. And are the products they sell fit for consumption and are the owners, pharmacists, if u can even call them that, actually qualified pharmacist?

Not really. In Puntland it is practically nonexistent. Lived there for nearly a year and didn't take any malaria pills. Also, never heard of any outbreaks.
