The true reasons for the Rise of Piracy in Somalia
There are many reasons why so called “piracyâ€Â, more like patriotic COAST GUARDING in certain contexts of course, arose in Somalia waters. Just today a Canadian cruise ship barely escaped a “search and seizure†mission by the fearless voluntary coast guards off Somali waters. Such spirit, such heart!
As well it should be mentioned that recent bold actions of the other well known patriotic voluntary naval forces of Xaradhere, as well as similar attempts by less altruistic persons along so called Eyl and Kismayo coasts, have made me think about what can only be called: job creation by another name. The socio-economic reasons behind the rise of piracy. There are many men who have, for diverse sources possess solid navigational and other seafaring skills who nonetheless have needless become unemployed, hungry, bitter and indeed lacking any sustenance, they have developed creative schemes of surviving. Imagine for a minute, you are a resident of say some coastal town in Somalia, Xardhere everyday you see huge foreign tankers, vessels, and every imaginable industrial carrier polluting your waters, harrying your small fishing boat as they laugh at you in their foreign languages and adding insult to injury, they steal your fish and other resources of the seas. You see dead fish and strange colour in the waters that make you experience respiratory problems you never had. Days go by and you find out other men, other communities are also suffering and one man stands up one night, a young strong individual, and says “listen adeeryal this need not be the caseâ€Â. Small youths begin to listen. The entrepreneur spirit mixes with vengeance and an all out WAR is declared against the marauding foreign trespassers. Not wasting time, small mobile speedboats are bought; heavy guns are mounted on top of them, not hard to imagine when the right kind of forces coordinate their actions together and in a few weeks: no more unemployment, no more feeling social or personally powerless. Now you can question this trespassers and their kenyatti henchmen face to face, and what to do they have to say for themselves, we are transporting food!
Well you reply to this fleshly Ukrainian or Chinese marauder, isn’t that strange, you certainly never bothered to offload your cargo but exploited our technological limitations to plough through our seas, now you and your boss is going to have to pay!
This is not to say that economic and other greedy motivations will not come to play in the further growth of piracy, but we can all rest a sure that JOB CREATION by any other name has been implemented. I am even told that the unemployment rate in Xardhere has been slashed by 30% and daily income grows per households. A noble enterprise: securing our nation’s waters and some here like to call them Pirates.
