I can think of many similiarities between the preislamic arabs and the Somalis today.
1. The preIslamic arabs(like the Somalis today) were chaotic, lawless, and were always at war with each other over trivial things such as tribe.
2.The preislamic arabs(like the Somalis today) were ignorant and they held little power comparable to others in the world such as the Persian and the Byzantine empire. The arabs were squashed between these two empires like Somalia is currently ruled By Ethiopia and Kenya.
3.The preIslamic arabs(like the Somalis) use to raid loot and each other.
4.The preislamic arabs(like the Somalis today) were oral communities and they relied on poetry to tell and preserve stories.
The arabs were saved by the revelation of Islam so they got lucky otherwise they would have remained insignificant as they were for a long time to come.
