Tbh I make mine (when i make it, not a common feature in our house) exactly how you described it, but just in case you want to know how: frying onions, then garlic & meat/chicken, seasoning & chicken stock cubes, fry till golden and all liquid absorbed, then add tomatoes (if fresh add earlier, if canned then blitz it & pour it in now). I like to add in some tomato but you could go without. Let it all come to boil (5 mins on high) & add oats & boiling water. Stir so they don't stick together. It's perfect if you overcook the oats slightly so they're very soft & breaking apart. Put into mixer and blend. Voila.
Change the flavour but keep the method the same. Flavours could be change of seasoning (e.g. cumin as main xawaash, or add lemon & swirls of olive oil, or make it spicy, or add beetroot to blend & top with feta cheese afterwards to make it sweet & sour)
