-This claim is based on Chinese Maps from the 13th century which showed the area belongs to them.
-Taiwan, Filipinos, Malaysians, Japanese, and Vietnamese also claim the area.
-$5 Trillion worth of goods pass through this area. There is also large deposits of natural resources.
-Enter the US. These other Asian countries are too weak to stand up to China. The US is the only country that could stand up to communist Chinese.
-The US Sec of Defense sent a warship to challenge China's claim to the area. He also said there would be more patrols in areas China claims.
-China said next time the US sends a warship to the area, it would block it or even sink it to protect its sovereignty.
