Lunch Lady Fired for Giving Free Meal to Student in Need

People advocated for her after she posted the story online and the school district reconsidered her termination. I know she meant well but she was wrong in giving out the free meal without her employer's consent. I'd have been better for her to cover the cost of that meal out of her own pocket.

In my involvement with my kid's school, I've seen babies being sent to school with little to nothing for lunch. One day, the school organized an outing for the children to go to the zoo. I, along with a few other parents were there to help supervise the kids and we were split up in groups of 5 (1 parent + 4 kids). This one little girl in my group had nothing else but a small pack of crackers and a bottle of water in her lunch box (the small dry crackers that one gets with a soup). Walaahi, seing that broke my heart and I ordered some proper food for the group. Unfortunately, this sort of thing happens too often. The school district in my region got funding from the government (with contributions from the parents that can afford it) to supplement the children's daily meals with healthy snacks (milk, fruits etc.) .

This lady should approach her colleagues , mobilize the parents and spearhead an effort to address the bigger issue.

i agree, she shouldnt give things not hers unless she pays for it.

Thank you Neph...I think that some parents, for whatever reasons, aren't up to their responsibilities. Nobody goes hungry in Canada, for want of food.

According to my sources Wanlawein and South Sudanese parents are big time offenders.

Both get huge funding from gov for their 6+ kids.

Not sure they are stingy and shameless to say the least.

You comparing your story to hers is like comparing apples to oranges. You went on one field trip the lady serves kids everyday for the whole school year. Is she suppose to cover every hungry child out of her own pocket?

She did the right thing...she saw a kid that needed food and she supplied it. The school and the public both know she did the right thing. That's why they hired her back.

This is one of those cases where both parties are right.From a perspective of the law those who say she should have paid are right.But from a human perspective she is right.There are some circumstances where the law is an ass as the saying goes and this is one of those cases.She did the right thing as far as I'm concerned

In America, people pay over 50% of their hard-earned income to federal, state, and city authorities through various taxing schemes. They pay skyrocketing property taxes. And they pay sales tax every time they buy something. Yet authorities in this country can't cover the food that is served in public schools for all kids? This is insane. :mindblown:

The lady did the right thing, and I hope this case inspires much needed debate on how these various taxing schemes are distributed.
