Isaias Aferwerki is an excellent visionary leader but like the late Siad Barre it looks like his creativity, energy and drive has stalled. That's the problem with leaders who build their state or support behind strong and military image.
The boogeyman and scare tactics can only work and inspire for so long.
By 2008 Isaias should have revised new ideas and brought about reforms. Reforms do not mean one stepping aside but being adoptable and expecting disruptive events be it neighbors, wider region, technology or just the world around.
What Isaias should have done was keep certain sect of the society in military drills while diversifying in other areas and also making elite unit in businesses, innovation and technology knowhow.
Mr. Isaias put the entire Eritrea staring at an empty military post entertaining them "Ethiopia will invade". They out grew those wonderful fear tactics and the Sawa camp.
I wish Ato Isaias combined his vision with an open/capitalist economic policy.
Still it's not too late. The Eritreans will surprise you. Expect surprises.
No doubt Eritrea needs a new unity leader to replace the Lion of Nakfa but they must not make the same mistake as Somali Republic and destroy Eritrea over ailing Isaias. The time to lead will come its own but the "leader" has to be ready.
Change is necessary. Change must be embraced and accepted.
You can learn one day from Isaias what you would have learned from Stanford over six intensive months. But the Lion of Nakfa lacks trust.
