The expensive luxury of electricity in Somalia

Mogadishu residents left in the dark amid price hikes from private electricity companies that many cannot afford.

Somaliland: High Electricity Cost Is Killing Our Country.

Electricity is the foundation towards any progress. What is the solution? Can Somaliland get access to the cheaper Ethiopian hydro-electricity?

In zoomalia one kilowatt is 1 dollar in somaliland it is .77 cents so it's cheaper there but both need to focus on renewable energy.

Guban

Ina Adeer, setting up the infrastructure of renewable energy is very expensive, but there is enough (sun) solar power to go around all year.

Rooble

Ina Adeer, that is the hydro I mentioned above. Does it have the capacity to reach the South?

Sorry to burst your bubble buddy, but BECO (Banaadir Electric Co.) charges $0.65/KW.

Couple of months ago they were charging $0.89/KW and there are plans to make it even cheaper; I'm not sure but I heard they are aiming for $0.2/KW.

Read the aljazeera report few days ago about mogadishu it clearly states
The East African country of some 10 million people has electricity that is among the most expensive in the world. A kilowatt of electricity in the Somali capital can cost as much as $1 an hour. That is five times more expensive than in neighbouring Kenya and 10 times more than in the United States.

Somalia's energy sector was completely destroyed following the collapse of the central government in 1991. Residents were forced to depend on  privately owned diesel generatorswhile many were left in the dark. Currently, more than seven electricity companies operate in the city - all owned by private individuals.

Yea I was right you jumped the gun they didn't even lower there prices yet nice try tho.
The residents of Mogadishu, Somalia, will soon receive cheaper electricity, according to Benadir Electrical Company (BECO). The company is the only power producer, transmitter and distributor in Mogadishu.

There are ambitious plans being laid out to further reduce the price of electricity by June 2015.

According to the Aljazeera article above, Guban is right because the electricity customer they quoted says, they charge her $1.00 per kilowatt p/h. But given these generators use diesel and the global petrol prices have dropped 30-40%, her electricity company didn't pass these cuts to their customers. Even if the other two electricity m suppliers have dropped their prices, she can't disconnect from her supplier because she will be charged a high disconnection fee which she couldn't afford.

Even the owner of benadir electricity said the reason why mogadishu electricity hasn't improved is because so much destruction during the two decades of war destroyed most infrastructure, ficilities where vandalized and plus lack of city planning and lack of technicians and old power system was destroyed everything is run on couple diesel generators it's whole can of worms.
In fact, BECO sees the current power generation infrastructure as temporary measures as the country rebuilds most of its economic infrastructure. The old power system was destroyed during the two decades of conflict and most of its facilities vandalised. Most of the surviving infrastructure belonged to Ente Nazionale Energia Elettrica, known as ENEE. This company was responsible for electricity generation and supply in Somalia before the civil war. Lack of qualified technical staff is the other challenge. Most of the experienced staff are old and there is no sufficient production of fresh manpower due lack of technical institutions that offer engineering and related courses. - See more at: http://somaliainvestor.so/index.php/spo ... X7f1m.dpuf
Kahie sees lack of proper town planning as a major hindrance to supply of electricity in Mogadishu. The poor planning of the city, which has led to erratic setting up of buildings and lack of spaces for construction of public utilities like power lines, is a major concern for BECO. - See more at: http://somaliainvestor.so/index.php/spo ... I think the best bet for Somaliland is through the Ethiopian grid. Otherwise the government has to provide their own cheaper alternative or private companies will continue to hike up the prices until it's almost impossible for people to afford it.

This is just another area where Somali people lives can be so much better if their government made affordable electricity available to them

Solar is the way forward, the people of somaliland especially have to be self sufficent and not rely on power from grids. Solar is perfect because the sun is there all the time alhamdulilah and we can benefit from it. In the uk there are a lot of people using solar energy and you hardly get sun and that small power they generate makes up around 5-10% of their energy consumption. Imagine what that can do for a sunny nation like somaliland. Berbera has the most potential as it's always hot and sunny there, wind power can be used on coastal towns from maydh all the way to zeila, the government needs to invest in this asap
